Three athletes from Curaçao (former Netherlands Antilles ) and one from South Sudan took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London as independent Olympic participants .

The NOK of the Netherlands Antilles wanted to continue its activities after the dissolution of the overseas territory and its partial incorporation into the Netherlands in October 2010. But the IOC Executive Council withdrew its membership from the NOK during the 123rd IOC session, which took place in Durban in July 2011 , as there was no longer any legal basis for an independent NOK. Athletes from the former overseas territory who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games were given the opportunity to compete as independent Olympic participants.

In South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, the IOC had not recognized any organization as a NOK before the Olympic Games, and a sports infrastructure was only being developed. The South Sudanese Guor Marial , who lives in the United States , therefore also started as an independent Olympian and competed in the marathon.
