Syria took part inthe 2012 Olympic Games in London . It was the twelfth participation in the Summer Olympics. The Syrian National Olympic Committee nominated ten athletes in seven sports.
Due to the ongoing civil war in Syria , there were concerns about Syria's participation in the Olympic Games. The President of the Syrian NOC, General Mowaffak Joumaa, told ITV News in April 2012 : "No question, we are participating." On the other hand, Abdelbasset Saroot , a former international goalkeeper who defected to the rebels, said his country's athletes will not be participating this year want: "They do not want to run for a flag that they are not proud of and that they do not believe in." British Prime Minister David Cameron assured that Syrian athletes would be able to take part in the Olympic Games in London. But all officials to whom the European Union's entry ban applies (including Joumaa) are not welcome.
The 400 m hurdler Ghfran Almouhamad (* 1989) from Aleppo was excluded from the 2012 Summer Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on August 11, 2012. The banned stimulant methylhexanamine was found in the A and B samples .
