Syria , whose NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya as-suriyya , was founded in 1948 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1948. In 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1976 there was no participation. In 1960, Syrian athletes competed as part of the team of the United Arab Republic (IOC abbreviation UAR). Athletes from Syria have not yet participated in the winter games. Young athletes have competed in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

The first Syrian Olympic team consisted of a diver in 1948 in London. Zouheir Al-Shourbagi was the first Syrian Olympian on August 3, 1948. The first woman in the country was the athlete Malak El-Nasser on August 31, 1972 in Munich.

In addition to diving, Syrian athletes participated in the following summer games in wrestling (from 1968), athletics and shooting (from 1972), weightlifting, boxing, judo and football (from 1980), swimming (from 1992), triathlon (from 2008) , Cycling and riding (from 2012) and table tennis (from 2016).

In 1980 a Syrian soccer team took part in the Olympic tournament. Syria did not qualify, but was invited to replace Iran. In the preliminary round they lost 3-0 to Algeria and then drew 1-1 with Spain. In the end there was a 5-0 defeat against the GDR team.

In 1984 in Los Angeles the first medal was won. Freestyle wrestler Joseph Atiyeh won the heavyweight silver medal. In 1996 in Atlanta, the athlete Ghada Shouaa won the heptathlon and thus achieved the first Syrian Olympic victory. Boxer Naser Al Shami won bronze in the heavyweight division in Athens in 2004. In 2012 in London, the weightlifter Ahed Joughili finished sixth in the heavyweight division. In 2016 the athlete Majed Ghazal reached the final in the high jump and finished 7th.

Youth games

Four teenagers, three boys and one girl, took part in the sports of athletics, horse riding, wrestling and swimming at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

In the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2014 in Nanjing nine young people took part, two boys and seven girls. The athletes competed in athletics, basketball, fencing and swimming. The girls' basketball team was eliminated after the group stage. She could only win one of her nine games. The team lost to Germany with 9:17.

IOC members

Sports official and former weightlifter Samih Moudallal has been an IOC member since 1998 . He is currently a member of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission.
