Chile , whose NOK was founded in 1934 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, sent athletes to the Olympic Games in 1912, 1920, 1924 and 1928, and since 1948 also to the Winter Games. Chile took part in the Summer Youth Games; no young people have yet been sent to the Winter Youth Games.

General overview

Summer games

The Chilean NOK states that the athlete Luis Subercaseaux competed in three disciplines in Athens in 1896. However, he is not mentioned in the official report of the Games. The IOC does not list him as a participant either, although 14 participating nations are named here as well.

In 1900, 1904 and 1908 Chile did not take part. In 1912 in Stockholm, Chile competed with a team of athletes, riders, cyclists and marksmen. The shooters Harald Ekwall and Félix Alegría were the first secured Olympic participants in Chile. They competed with the dueling pistol on June 29, 1912. Boxers, fencers and tennis players from Chile first took part in 1924. Manuel Plaza finished sixth in the marathon . In 1928 in Amsterdam he was able to win the silver medal. This made him the first Chilean medalist at the Olympic Games. In Amsterdam, swimmers and a soccer team took part for the first time. The Chilean football selection was eliminated after the first game, a preliminary round match against Portugal, which was lost 2: 4.

In 1932 Chile did not take part. In 1936 a basketball team and sailors started for the first time. With the athlete Raquel Martínez, a Chilean woman took part in the Olympic Games for the first time on August 3, 1936. The sailor Erich Wichmann-Harbeck came fourth in the Finn dinghy. Water polo, modern pentathlon and diving appeared in London for the first time in 1948 in the program of the Chilean team. With three wins in five games, the basketball players qualified for the quarter-finals, in which they were defeated by France. In the placement round they beat Czechoslovakia and finally lost to Uruguay in the game for 5th place. The pentathlete Nilo Floody was ninth in the final classification.

In 1952 in Helsinki Chilean rowers started for the first time. In Helsinki, show jumper Óscar Cristi won the silver medal both individually and with the team. The basketball players could improve. With two wins in three preliminary round games they qualified for the quarter-finals, which were played in two groups. Here you lost three times in three games. Bulgaria was beaten in the placement round, the game for fifth place was won against Brazil.

In 1956 in Melbourne, Marlene Ahrens won the first Olympic medal for a Chilean woman with silver in the javelin throw. The boxing relay of Chile contributed three more medals and thus made the participation in Melbourne the most successful Olympic start in Chile for the next 48 years. In the middleweight division, Ramón Tapia won silver. Bronze was won by Claudio Barrientos in the bantamweight division and Carlos Lucas in the light heavyweight division. Günther Mund finished seventh in jumping. In 1960 in Rome, Marlene Ahrens was able to reach the javelin final again, but this time only came twelfth. In the trap shooting, Juan Enrique Lira finished sixth. In 1968 in Mexico City, Nicolas Atalah finished sixth in the skeet shooting, his teammate Jorge Jottar seventh. The following participations were unsuccessful for Chile, whereby in 1980 the call for a boycott by the USA was followed and no team was sent to Moscow.

In 1984 in Los Angeles, the shot putter Gert Weil finished sixth. The soccer team of Chile reached the quarter-finals against Italy after one win and two draws in three preliminary round matches and was eliminated there after a 0-1 defeat in extra time. In Los Angeles, a Chilean judoka took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time. In Seoul 1988 Alfonso de Iruarrízaga was able to win silver in skeet shooting. Gert Weil repeated his sixth place from Los Angeles in the shot put. Chilean table tennis players took part for the first time.

In 1996 in Atlanta a weightlifter from Chile competed for the first time. In 2000 in Sydney Taekwondo, Triathlon and archery were added. In Sydney, the men's soccer team won the bronze medal. With two wins in three preliminary rounds, the team qualified for the quarter-finals. Here Nigeria was beaten 4-1. In the semifinals, Chile lost 2-1 to Cameroon. Chile then won the bronze match against the USA 2-0.

Participation in Athens in 2004 was the most successful participation in its Olympic history for Chile. The tennis doubles Fernando González / Nicolás Massú defeated the German duo Nicolas Kiefer / Rainer Schüttler in five sets on August 22, 2004 and thus achieved the first Chilean Olympic victory. A day later, Massú won the individual competition and became the first Chilean double Olympic champion. González won the bronze medal game. A Chilean canoeist took part for the first time in Athens.

Fernando González won the silver medal again in Beijing in 2008. In terms of the number of medals, he is the most successful Chilean at the Olympic Games to date. In 2012 in London a Chilean wrestler and two gymnasts started for the first time. The shot putter Natalia Duco was ninth. In the skeet shooting, Francisca Crovetto finished eighth. The gymnast Tomás González reached two apparatus finals. He finished fourth both on the ground and in the horse jump. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Natalia Duco qualified again for the final in the shot put. This time she finished ninth. María Fernanda Valdés finished seventh in weightlifting in the middle heavyweight division. Bárbara Riveros Díaz finished fifth in the triathlon. The gymnast Tomás González also reached the final on the floor in Rio. This time he finished seventh. In Rio, Chilean beach volleyball players and a golfer took part for the first time.

Winter games

The first Chilean winter sports enthusiasts took part in St. Moritz in 1948. The Chilean team consisted of four alpine ski racers. The first winter Olympians were Hernan Oelckers, Arturo Hammersley, Jaime Errázuriz and Gonzalo Domínguez, who competed in the downhill on February 2, 1948. On February 13, 1968, Verena Vogt was the first Chilean woman to take part in the Winter Games. Until 1994, Chilean participants were unsuccessful. It wasn't until 1998 that two Chileans were able to place in the top 15 participants. The brothers Thomás and Rainer Grob were 11th and 13th in the final classification in the alpine combination. In 2002 in Salt Lake City, Chilean biathletes took part for the first time, in 2014 in Sochi freestyle riders and a cross-country skier.

Youth games

Chile took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with 50 young people, 23 boys and 27 girls . The girls' team in football became Olympic champions. After a 3-2 victory over Turkey in the semi-finals, there was a penalty shoot-out after 1: 1 after extra time against Equatorial Guinea, which the Chileans won 5-3. In athletics, the shot putter Joaquín Ballivián was sixth. In cycling, Laura Holloway finished fifth on the mountain bike, fifth in the time trial and ninth on the BMX.

In 2014 , 15 athletes competed in Nanjing , nine boys and six girls. Diego Delmonaco was eighth in the 110 meter hurdles. In the mixed show jumping team with five show jumpers from five nations Antoine Porte won the silver medal. This medal is not counted in the Chilean medal balance, it is credited to the medal balance of the mixed teams.
