Ramón Tapia

Ramón Tapia Zapata (born March 17, 1932 in Antofagasta , † April 11, 1984 ) was a boxer from Chile and silver medalist in the middleweight division of the 1956 Olympic Games.

Career

In addition to Carlos Lucas and Claudio Barrientos , he took part as one of three boxers from Chile at the 16th Summer Olympics in 1956 in Melbourne , Australia . While Lucas and Barrientos were eliminated from the games with a bronze medal in the bantam and light heavyweight division, Tapia won the silver medal in the middleweight division. He defeated Zbigniew Piórkowski from Poland, Július Torma from Czechoslovakia and Gilbert Chapron from France, before losing to Gennadi Shatkow from the Soviet Union in the final .

In 1959 he turned professional, but was unsuccessful. In the fight for the Chilean championship, he lost by knockout against Humberto Loayza. In June 1963 he ended his short professional career with two wins and five losses.
