San Marino , whose NOK , the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese , was founded in 1959 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1960. With the exception of the Summer Games of 1964, athletes were sent to all subsequent Summer Games. In 1976, San Marinese athletes took part in winter games for the first time.

A total of 87 participants were sent, eleven of them women. So far, no athlete from San Marino has won an Olympic medal.

In 1976 , the 16-year-old athlete Graziella Santini, the youngest athlete from San Marino, took part. The oldest participant was Leo Franciosi in 1980 at the age of 47 .
