Olympic history of Barbados

The Barbados Olympic Association is the National Olympic Committee of Barbados . It was founded in 1955 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee that same year .

So far, the athletes on the Caribbean island have participated in twelve summer games. The Olympic debut took place in 1968. With the exception of the boycotted games in Moscow in 1980, athletes were sent to all other summer games. So far, no athletes from the island state have participated in the winter games.

Athletes from the country were able to participate in Rome in 1960 as team members of the West Indian Federation . After the dissolution of the federation, Barbados was able to send its own team to the Olympic Games, but they did not participate in the Tokyo Games in 1964. The first participation took place in 1968 in Mexico City. The nine-man Olympic team consisted of athletes, cyclists, marksmen, swimmers and weightlifters. The Caribbean nation's first Olympian was weightlifter Anthony Phillips on October 13, 1968.

1972 in Munich for the first time Barbadian women took part in the Olympic Games. The first female Olympian was the 800-meter runner Heather Gooding on August 31, 1972. As in 1968 and 1972, the Barbadian participants from 1976 were unsuccessful. Barbados followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.

1984 in Los Angeles for the first time Barbadian boxers and sailors took part. In athletics, the men's 400-meter relay was able to reach an Olympic final for the first time. The relay was ranked 6th. Another final participation was achieved in synchronized swimming. Chemene Sinson achieved 11th place in the singles. A diver and a judoka from Barbados first took part in Seoul in 1988.

As in 1988, the Barcelona games in 1992 were unsuccessful. 1996 in Atlanta for the first time a Barbadian gymnast took part. The sprinter Obadele Thompson ran in 4th place in the 200 meter final. The swimmer Leah Martindale also reached a final. She finished fifth in the 50 meter freestyle. In 2000 in Sydney Obadele Thompson ran as in Atlanta in fourth place over 200 meters. In the 100-meter run, he came third and won the first Olympic medal for his country with bronze.

In 2004 in Athens Thompson reached the 100 meter final again and this time came seventh. In cycling, track cyclist Barry Forde reached the quarter-finals in the sprint. In the final ranking, he finished 6th. The 2008 Beijing Games were unsuccessful for the Barbadians. In 2012 in London, the hurdler Ryan Brathwaite reached the final and was fifth.

At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, participants in triathlon and tennis took part for the first time. The marksman Michael Maskell took part in the Olympic Games for the fifth time after a break of 12 years in Rio.

IOC member

The finance manager and former president of the Barbadian NOK Austin Sealy has been a member of the IOC since 1994 .
