The United Arab Emirates ' NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya al-wataniyya bi-Daulat al-Imarat al-ʿarabiyya al-Muttahida , was founded in 1979 and recognized by the IOC a year later . Since 1984, state athletes have taken part in all the Summer Olympics. Participation in winter games has so far been waived. Young athletes took part in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

The country's first Olympic team consisted of athletes in Los Angeles in 1984. The first Olympic athletes of the Emirates were the sprinter Mohamed Abdullah, the middle-distance runner Ibrahim Aziz and the hurdler Ibrahim Khamis on August 3, 1984. The first woman to represent the Emirates at the Olympic Games was show jumper Latifa Al Maktum on August 15, 2008.

In addition to athletics, the United Arab Emirates were subsequently also represented in swimming and cycling (from 1988), shooting (from 1996), judo, riding and sailing (from 2008) as well as weightlifting and football (from 2012).

2004 was a success. The marksman Ahmed Al Maktum , a member of the Dubai royal family , won the double trap competition, becoming the first medalist and Olympic champion in the Emirates. In trap shooting, he was also fourth. In 2008, he was seventh in double trap. In 2016 Sergiu Toma won bronze in the light middleweight division. Toma started in 2008 and 2012 for his native Moldova.

Youth games

Four teenagers, three boys and one girl, took part in the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. They competed in the sports of horse riding, shooting, sailing and taekwondo. The show jumping rider Ali Abdullah Al-Qassimi was most successful on his horse Pearl Monarch , who achieved 4th place with the mixed team Asia

In the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , four young people took part again, this time two boys and two girls. They competed in athletics, sailing, shooting and swimming, but were unsuccessful.
