Tajikistan , whose NOK , the Kumitai millii olimpii Todschikiston , was founded in 1992 andrecognizedby the IOC in1993, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1996 and in the Winter Olympics since 2002. Athletes from Tajikistan competedfor the Soviet Olympic team from 1952 to 1988during the Soviet Union . In 1992 Tajik athletes wereintegrated intothe CIS team. Young athletes have competed in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

The first Tajik Olympic team in 1996 consisted of athletes, boxers, wrestlers, judoka and diver in Atlanta. The first Olympians in the country were judoka Saidahtam Rahimow and boxer Tschursched Hasanow on July 20, 1996. The first woman in Tajikistan on July 28th was the marathon runner Gulsara Dodoboyeva.

In the following winter games, Tajik athletes competed in swimming (from 2000), shooting and archery (from 2004), weightlifting (from 2008) and taekwondo (from 2012).

The first medals were won in Beijing in 2008. First, on August 11, 2008, the judoka Rassul Boqijew won bronze in the lightweight, becoming Tajikistan's first medalist. Ten days later, the freestyle wrestler Yusup Abdussalomow won silver in the light heavyweight division. The first woman in the country with an Olympic medal was the boxer Mawsuna Choryeva, who won bronze in the lightweight in 2012.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the athlete Dilschod Nazarow became Tajikistan's first Olympic champion with his hammer throw victory. In London, Nazarov finished tenth.

Winter games

Tajikistan first took part in the Winter Olympics in 2002 in Salt Lake City. The first and only athlete on the Tajik Olympic team was ski racer Andrei Drygin . Drygin was the only participant from Tajikistan in 2006 and 2010. Alischer Qudratow followed in 2014 .

Youth games

Six teenagers, four boys and two girls, took part in the sports of athletics, boxing, wrestling, taekwondo and archery at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. The freestyle wrestler Bachodur Kadirow won silver in the middleweight division, the Taekwondoin Schukrona Sharifowa bronze in the flyweight division.

In the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2014 in Nanjing was attended by eight youths, five boys and three girls. The athletes competed in the sports of track and field, shooting, archery, judo, wrestling and swimming, but could not win a medal.
