The umbrella organization of the Gambia Olympic Movement is the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC). The GNOC was founded in 1972 and recognized four years later by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

history

The Gambian Olympic Movement was formed in the early 1970s. At the instigation of Mahtarr A. Sarr , the "National Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association" was founded in 1972. The aim was to bring a delegation of athletes to the XX. Sending the Summer Olympics to Munich . However, the association was not recognized by the IOC because it did not meet one of the basic requirements, the control of at least five Olympic sports.

The project received new impulses in the run-up to the XXI. 1976 Summer Olympics . After the founding of a national basketball federation ( GBF ) and a volleyball federation ( GVBA ) in 1972, a handball federation in 1975 and a wrestler federation in 1976, the basic requirements of the IOC for admission were met. Under Omar BA Sey , the new President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee , a second application to join the Olympic family was made. After the preliminary approval, the IOC approved the application during its 78th session in Montreal .

Participation

Gambian athletes traveled to the Summer Olympics for the first time in 1976 . As a protest against the participation of the New Zealand team, whose rugby team broke the international sports ban against South Africa shortly before the games , the African countries decided to boycott the Montreal games . The Gambia joined this boycott and the five athletes and two officials left the Olympic Village. Four years later, the GNOC declined the invitation to the Summer Olympics in Moscow , thereby joining the boycott of most western countries.

So it happened in 1984 at the Summer Games in Los Angeles for the Olympic debut of the country. Since then the country has participated in all summer games. No Gambian athletes have yet been sent to the Winter Olympics. In Los Angeles, the Gambian team consisted only of track and field athletes. The first Olympians in Gambia were 100-meter runners Bakary Jarju and Sheikh Omar Fye on August 3, 1984, as well as 800-meter runner Peter Ceesay , whose twin brother Paul started over 1500 meters. On August 4, 1984, the 100-meter sprinter Jabou Jawo was the first Gambian athlete to start.

In Seoul in 1988 , Gambian wrestlers went on the mat for the first time. Sprinter Dawda Jallow was the first Gambier to qualify for another round, here the quarter-finals over 400 meters. Jallow, who also participated in Barcelona in 1992 and in Atlanta in 1996 , became the most successful Gambian Olympic participant to date. 2008 in Beijing with the middleweight Badou Jack took part for the first time a boxer for Gambia. Jack was able to start for Gambia because his father was a native of Gambia. In addition to the Gambian, Jack also has Swedish citizenship. As a Swede, he became the WBC super middleweight world champion in 2015 .

In Rio de Janeiro 2016 , a judoka and a swimmer for Gambia took part for the first time.
