Guyana , whose NOK , the Guyana Olympic Association , was founded in 1935, sentathletes to the Summer Olympics for the first time in 1968after independence from Great Britain in 1966. Except for 1976, Guyana took part in all subsequent summer games. As early as 1948 to 1964, athletes called British Guiana participated. So far, no Guyanese athletes have been sent to the Winter Games. Young athletes took part in the two youth summer games held so far.

General overview

Summer games

The first Olympic team in Guyana consisted of a track and field athlete, a cyclist and two weightlifters in 1948 in London. The first Olympian in Guyana was the athlete Charles Thompson in the 100-meter run on July 30, 1948. The sprinter Claudette Masdammer was the first woman in Guyana to compete in the Olympic Games on November 24, 1956. 1960 in Rome the first Guyanese boxer was used. 1972 in Munich the athletes competed under the name Guyana , which is still valid today .

Guyana stayed away from the Montreal Games in 1976, thus supporting the boycott of African countries out of solidarity. In 1980 in Moscow, boxer Michael Anthony won the bantamweight bronze medal, the first and to date only Olympic medal in Guyana. A Guyanese swimmer took part for the first time in Athens in 2004, and a judoka in London in 2012. It wasn't until 2016 in Rio de Janeiro that a Guyanese athlete was able to come up with a top ranking. The triple jumper Troy Doris came in seventh.

Youth games

Guyana took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with four young people . No participant could qualify for a final. In 2014 , four young people again took part in the same sports (athletics, swimming and table tennis) in Nanjing . Again, Guyana was unsuccessful.
