Algeria , whose NOK , the Comité Olympique Algérien , was founded in 1963 andrecognizedby the IOC in 1964, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1964. With the exception of the boycotted games in 1976, Algerian athletes took part in all subsequent summer games. An Algerian delegation was sent to the Winter Games three times (1992, 2006 and 2010).
Algerian athletes had won 17 medals by 2016. In addition to five gold medals, there are four silver and eight bronze medals. The most successful athlete with a total of three medals is the track and field athlete Taoufik Makhloufi , who won two silver medals in 2016 (over 800 and 1500 meters) after his victory over 1500 meters in 2012. With nine medals, athletics is the most successful sport in Algeria. Six medals were won in boxing and two in judo.
1960s
With the gymnast Mohamed Lazhari, an Algerian took part in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics for the first time. He was the only Algerian participant in Tokyo. Three athletes competed in Mexico City in 1968 . As in 1964, no medal was won.
1970s
Four athletes and a boxer competed in Munich in 1972 , but were just as unsuccessful. The Games of Montreal 1976 was due Algeria away the boycott of African countries.
1980s
In 1980 in Moscow 54 athletes were sent to the games by the Algerian NOK. For the first time, Algerian teams took part. The Algerian soccer team was able to qualify for the quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat against the GDR, in which they were eliminated 3-0 against Yugoslavia. The handball selection reached place 10 in the tournament.
In 1984 in Los Angeles , Olympic medals were celebrated for the first time. The boxer Mohamed Zaoui became the first Algerian medalist with his bronze medal in the middleweight division. The light heavyweight Mustapha Moussa also won bronze on the same day.
At the 1988 Seoul Games , Algerian women took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. The first Algerian female Olympian was tennis player Oarda Bouchabou on September 23, 1988.
1990s
At the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville , four winter athletes, including a woman, competed for the first time. The first winter athletes in Algeria at the Olympic Games were the alpine ski racers Kamel and Mourad Guerri , who both competed in the Super G. The first female winter athlete was the alpine ski racer Nacera Boukamoum.
The first Olympic victory was celebrated at the 1992 Barcelona Games . At the same time, this Olympic victory also meant the first medal win by an Algerian woman. The athlete Hassiba Boulmerka was able to win the competition in the 1500 meter run on August 8, 1992. There was also a bronze medal in boxing by the featherweight Hocine Soltani .
In 1996 in Atlanta , two men were able to be entered on the list of winners. Soltani won the Olympic title in the lightweight and was the most successful Algerian athlete with two medals. Noureddine Morceli won the 1500 meter race on the same day. The boxer Mohamed Bahari contributed another bronze medal in the middleweight division.
2000 until today
The 2000 Games in Sydney became the most successful Olympic Games for Algeria. There were five medals at the end of the games. Four athletes won a gold medal ( Nouria Mérah-Benida over 1500 meters), a silver medal ( Ali Saïdi-Sief over 5000 meters) and two bronze medals ( Abderrahmane Hammad in the high jump and Djabir Saïd-Guerni over 800 meters). The boxer Mohamed Allalou was able to win another bronze medal in the light welterweight division.
In 2012 in London , the athlete Taoufik Makhloufi won the 1,500 meter run. Makhloufi also won two silver medals (800 and 1500 meters) in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 , replacing Hocine Soltani as the most successful Olympic participant.
IOC member
From 1995 to 2009 Mustapha Larfaoui , founder of the Algerian Swimming Association and former President of FINA , was a member of the IOC. He has been an honorary member since 2009.
