Zambia , whose NOK , the National Olympic Committee of Zambia , was founded in 1964, first took partin the Summer Olympics in1964, under the name Northern Rhodesia . The name Zambia has been usedsince 1968. In 1976, the country participated in the boycott of the Montreal Olympics to protest against New Zealand's participation. Participation in winter games has so far been waived.
Overview
Zambian athletes first took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 under the name of Northern Rhodesia . The team included track and field athletes, boxers, fencers, wrestlers and swimmers. The first Olympian in his country was the boxer Cornelis van der Walt on October 12, 1964. The first female Olympian was fencer Patricia Skinner two days later. In 1968 in Mexico City , the team started for the first time under the name Zambia .
As before, the Zambian team was unsuccessful in 1972 in Munich . Zambia followed the call to boycott African countries and stayed away from the 1976 Montreal Games . 1980 in Moscow for the first time a soccer team took part in the Olympic tournament. In addition, the country's judoka started at the Olympic Games for the first time.
In 1984 in Los Angeles , Zambia celebrated its first medal win. The boxer Keith Mwila won the bronze medal in the light flyweight division. In 1988 in Seoul , the Zambian soccer team reached the quarter-finals, where they failed 4-0 against the Federal Republic of Germany.
After an unsuccessful participation in Barcelona in 1992 , the second medal for Zambia could be celebrated at the following Atlanta games in 1996 . Samuel Matete won silver in the 400-meter hurdles, 0.24 seconds behind the winner.
In the following Olympic Games no Zambian athletes were able to stage themselves. A Zambian badminton player competed for the first time in Beijing in 2008 .

The President of the Zambian NOC, Patrick Chamunda , was a member of the IOC from 2002 to 2016. He has been an honorary member since 2016.
