Olympic history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo , whose NOK , the Comité Olympique Congolais , was founded in 1963 and recognized by the IOC in 1968, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1968. In 1972, 1976 and 1980 they did not participate. No athlete in the country has yet participated in the winter games.
Congo Kinshasa
Under the name Congo-Kinshasa , the country first took part in the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 . The members of the time trial team, the cyclists Constantin Kabemba, François Ombanzi, Jean Barnabe and Samuel Kibamba, were the first Olympic athletes in their country.
The country's NOK decided not to take part in the games in Munich 1972 , Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980 .
Zaire
1984 in Los Angeles one entered under the new name Zaire . This time athletes and boxers competed unsuccessfully. The participations in Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992 were equally unsuccessful . The country's first female Olympian competed in Barcelona. Christine Bakombo came in 37th in the marathon. With the women's national basketball team, a team from the Congo started for the first time.
Democratic Republic of Congo
At the Sydney Games in 2000 , the Olympic team went under the name Democratic Republic of the Congo . In Sydney as in Athens 2004 there were no top placements. Table tennis players took part in Athens for the first time.
A swimmer and a judoka competed for the first time in Beijing in 2008 , and a taekwondo for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 .
