Niger's Olympic premiere took place at the 1964 Tokyo Games . The first, and in Tokyo only, Olympic athlete in the country was welterweight boxer Issaka Daboré , who took up his first fight on October 12, 1964 and was able to advance to the quarter-finals. Only boxers were sent to the following games in Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972 . In Munich Daboré, this time in the light welterweight division, won the first Olympic medal for Niger. After his semi-final defeat, he was honored with the bronze medal.

In 1976 and 1980 Niger followed the calls for boycotts from African countries and the USA and did not send any athletes to Montreal and Moscow. It was not until 1984 in Los Angeles that the Niger returned to the Olympic stage, this time with athletes for the first time.

In the following Olympic Games, Niger was unsuccessful, no participant was able to qualify for another round. In 1996 in Atlanta , the only 14-year-old athlete Rachida Mahamane was the first woman from Niger to take part in the Olympic Games. Nigerien swimmers took part for the first time in Sydney in 2000 , a judoka in Athens in 2004 and a rower in London in 2012 .

The unsuccessful Nigerien participants ended in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro with the winning of the silver medal by the Taekwondoin Abdoulrazak Issoufou Alfaga in the heavyweight division.
