Brunei , whose NOK , the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council , was founded in 1984, has been actively participating in the Summer Olympic Games since 1996. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games. Young athletes took part in the two youth summer games held so far.

Overview

Summer games

Brunei was already represented in Seoul in 1988, but no active athletes took part. The Sultanate, which was there under the name Brunei Darussalam , was represented by a functionary. Only in 1996 in Atlanta were active athletes there. The country's first Olympian on July 26, 1996 was sports shooter Abdul Hakeem Jefri Bolkiah . The member of the Brunei dynasty was the only athlete in Atlanta. In 2000 in Sydney a track and field athlete started for the first time.

In 2008, the NOK Bruneis missed the registration deadline for the two nominated athletes and was therefore unable to compete in Beijing. With the sprinter Maziah Mahusin, who also carried the flag at the opening ceremony, a woman from the Sultanate took part in the Olympic Games for the first time on August 3, 2012 in London. This came under pressure from the IOC, as Brunei was at the time one of three countries, alongside Saudi Arabia and Qatar, that had never sent women to the Olympic Games. In London, a swimmer from the country took part for the first time, and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro a badminton player for the first time.

Youth games

Three young athletes, a boy and two girls, competed in swimming and athletics at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore .

In 2014 in Nanjing , three athletes, two boys and one girl, took part again. They competed in athletics and fencing.
