Cuba , whose NOK , the Comité Olimpico Cubano , was founded in 1926 andrecognizedby the IOC in1954, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1900. Cuban athletes have not yet been sent to the winter games. Cuba also took part in the youth summer games held so far.

General

Cuba during the invasion of the nations in 2016

Cuba is the second most successful nation in America after the United States and the most successful in Latin America. Cuba is also the most successful among the nations that only took part in the summer games. Of the nations that have never hosted the Olympic Games, Cuba is the fourth most successful nation behind Hungary, Romania and Poland. With 34 Olympic victories and 67 medals in total, Cuba is the second most successful boxing nation at the Olympic Games after the USA. In baseball, with five Olympic Games in the program from 1992 to 2008, Cuba is the leading nation with three Olympic victories and two silver medals. In the core Olympic sport of athletics, Cuba ranks 20th with ten Olympic victories and 41 medals. In wrestling, Cuba ranks 12th with nine Olympic victories and 22 medals in total, and in judo with six Olympic victories and 36 medals, it even ranks fifth.

The first Olympian in Cuba was the fencer Ramón Fonst on June 1, 1900 . With his victory in the epee competition, he was also the first Cuban medalist and Olympic champion. Fonst won a total of five medals in 1900 and 1904. This makes him the most successful Olympian in Cuban Olympic history.

On November 23, 1956, the athlete Bertha Díaz became the first Cuban woman to take part in the Olympic Games. The first women's medals were won in Mexico City in 1968 with silver, the 4 x 100 meter relay. The first woman medal in an individual discipline was won by the athlete Silvia Chivás , who was third in the 100 meters in 1972. The javelin thrower María Caridad Colón became the first Cuban Olympic champion in 1980.

In the beginning, the Cuban Olympic teams were relatively small. In Paris 1900, only one Cuban took part, Ramón Fonst. It was not until 1948 in London that the team was in double figures. In 1968 it passed the 100 mark for the first time, and in 1980 the 200 mark. The largest team with 229 athletes took part in Sydney in 2000.

In 1992, Cuba was the most successful. 14 Olympic victories with a total of 31 medals were recorded. At least one gold medal has been won in all participations since 1964.

Cuba boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Games, joining the Soviet Union's call to boycott. The boycott was justified with alleged lack of safety on the part of the athletes. Cuba, like other countries that boycotted the Los Angeles Games, participated in the counter-event Friendship Contests.

Cuba also stayed away from the 1988 Seoul Games. Head of state Fidel Castro had previously supported North Korea in his demand to co-host the Games. After the IOC failed to comply with North Korean demands, North Korea boycotted its neighboring country's games. Cuba, like Nicaragua, the Seychelles, Albania, Madagascar and Ethiopia, showed solidarity with North Korea and did not send a team to Seoul.

Applications for hosting the Olympic Games

The Cuban capital Havana has applied three times to host the Summer Olympics. The first application was to host the 7th Summer Olympics in 1920. At the 17th IOC session in Lausanne , however, the games were awarded to Antwerp .

Havana only applied again to host the 29th Summer Olympics in 2008, but the application was not accepted by the IOC. The same happened with the application for the following 2012 Summer Games. The IOC did not accept this application either.
