Alberto Blanco (born February 17, 1950 ) is a retired Cuban weightlifter .

Athletic career

Blanco's first international competition was the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , which also represented the World Championships. With a duel performance of 345.0 (152.5 / 192.5 kg), he took sixth place in the medium-heavy weight category up to 90 kg. The first place winner David Rigert achieved 382.5 kg.

At the 1977 World Cup in Stuttgart, Blanco increased his performance by 10 kilograms and finished third in the duel with 355.0 kg (157.5 / 197.5 kg) behind Sergej Poltoratsky with 375.0 kg and Rolf Milser with 370.0 kg. In 1978 Blanco changed the weight class to the 1st heavyweight up to 100 kg, in which he achieved 362.5 kg (162.5 / 200.0 kg) for the World Cup in Gettysburg and thus took fourth place. Rigert, who had also changed classes, was first ahead of Sergej Arakelov with 390.0 kg each. The following year Blanco finished the World Championships in Saloniki with a duel of 372.5 kg (165.0 / 207.5 kg) in third place. The winner was Pavel Syrchin with 385.0 kg.

The highlight of Blancos career was winning the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . With 172.5 kg in the snatch, 212.5 kg in the push and 385.0 kg in the duel, he placed behind Ota Zaremba with 395.0 kg and Igor Nikitin with 392.5 kg. Since these Olympic Games again represented the world championships for the same year, Blanco was also world championship third.

Blanco took part in the world championships in 1981 and 1982, but remained unplaced on both occasions.
