Ota Zaremba (born April 22, 1957 in Karviná ) is a former Czechoslovak weightlifter and Olympic champion.
Career
Zaremba's international career began with his participation in the 1979 World Championships in Saloniki . Here he was able to realize 370.0 kg (172.5 / 197.5 kg) in a duel in the 1st heavyweight up to 100 kg. This meant silver in the snatch and fourth place in a duel. First was Pawel Sirchin kg with 385.0.
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Zaremba was able to improve significantly and reached 395.0 kg (180.0 / 215.0 kg) in a duel. After his third attempt in the snatch with a valid 180.0 kg, Zaremba tried his fourth, out of competition, attempt at a new world record with 183.5 kg, but failed. In pushing he was able to make all three attempts valid with 205.0 kg, 210.0 kg and 215.0 kg. The runner-up Igor Nikitin lifted a total of 392.5 kg (177.5 / 215.0 kg). In the last attempt, Nikitin failed at 220.0 kg in the push, which would have meant gold. Since the 1980 Olympic Games were also the world championships of that year, Zaremba also won his only world championship title in both combat and snatch. In pushing he was runner-up in the world championship.
Zaremba's last World Cup was in Lille in 1981 . Here, however, he could not bring in valid attempts in either of the two disciplines.
Despite his relatively short international career, Zaremba managed to set three world records in 1981. With 185.5 kg and 187.5 kg, he broke the record in snatching twice and with 415.0 kg also the two-way world record.
