Pawel Viktorovich Kuznetsov ( Russian Павел Викторович Кузнецов ; born July 10, 1961 in Strunino , Russia ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Athletic career

Kuznetsov first attracted international attention in 1983 when he won the World Championships in Moscow in the class up to 100 kg. With 422.5 kg, consisting of 182.5 kg in the snatch and 240.0 kg in the push, he achieved the same performance as his compatriot Alexander Popow, who however brought more body weight on the scales. In 1985, his duel performance of 407.5 kg at the World Championships in Södertälje was only enough for second place behind the Hungarian Andor Szanyi , who scored 415.0 kg.

For the 1987 World Cup, Kuznetsov was able to increase his performance again to 422.5 kg, which was enough for the world title ahead of Nicu Vlad with 420.0 kg. Also at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he was able to distance his competitor Vlad clearly and won the gold medal with 425.0 kg with a gap of 22.5 kg on the runner-up. A year later for the World Championships in Athens, Kuznetsov's performance dropped to 400.0 kg and he achieved third place behind Vlad and Stefanov.
