Navab Nasirshelal ( Persian نواب نصیرشلال; * April 1, 1989 in Ahvaz ) is a former Iranian weightlifter .

biography

Navab Nasirshelal was born in Ahvaz and grew up in Masjed Soleyman . He started lifting weights at the age of 15 because of his father. In 2012 he began studying sports at Azad Islamic University and was coached by Kourosh Bagheri of the Iranian national team.

Nasirshelal made his international debut in 2006 at the Junior World Championships in the 94 kg class, where he finished fifth. Two years later, he won two bronze medals at the Junior World Championships and a fat cat in the snatch at the Asian Championships. At the Junior World Championships in 2008 he was able to win three more bronze medals before he switched completely to the senior division. At the Asian Championships in 2009 he won gold in the push and silver in the duel in the class up to 94 kg. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , he competed in the heavyweight division . Despite knee pain, he finished second behind the Ukrainian Oleksij Torochtij . As Torochtij was disqualified for positive doping tests, Nasirshelal was named Olympic champion in 2019.
