Jaan Talts , in the Soviet Union Яан Аугустович Тальтс , (born May 19, 1944 in Laiksaare , rural community Saarde , Pärnu district ) is a former Estonian weightlifter and functionary who, due to the occupation of his country by the Soviet Union, competes internationally for this went.

Career

Jaan Talts was a very versatile athlete as a student. He did athletics , especially short-distance runs, swam and played volleyball . He started lifting weights at the age of 15 in agricultural school . In 1963 he joined the army. There he made good progress under coach Jakow Krinitsky. In 1964 he was Soviet junior champion, but could not compete in 1965 due to knee and back problems. In 1966 he finished 2nd in the middle heavyweight division behind Eduard Browko when he first participated in the Soviet championships . As a great talent and hope for the future, the 22-year-old athlete was sent to the World and European Championships in Berlin in 1966 . There, however, he had to pay hard to learn because he was eliminated with three unsuccessful attempts at pressing without placing. However, Jaan was unstoppable, finished 1966 with a three-way performance of 490 kg and scored at the Soviet championships in 1967 as the first weightlifter in the world in the middle heavyweight over 500 kg. Nevertheless, he suffered another setback in 1968, because he was surprisingly defeated by the Finn Kaarlo Kangasniemi , starting as a high favorite . In 1972 he won the Olympic gold medal in Munich in a convincing manner. It was remarkable how after the catastrophe in the Soviet team, when Vladimir Kanygin , Walery Schary , Boris Pavlov and David Rigert were eliminated from the middle, light and middle heavyweight classes because of three failed attempts in one of the disciplines, head coach Alexei Medvedev took over the initiative practically disempowered and together with Vasili Alexejew won two gold medals for the Soviet Union. In 1973 he ended his career as an active weightlifter.

Today Jaan Talts lives as a businessman in Tallinn . He has already held several functions in the Estonian Weightlifting Association and is also a sponsor for it.
