Stefan Grützner
Stefan Grützner (born June 29, 1948 in Chemnitz ) is a former German weightlifter .
Career as an active athlete
Stefan Grützner started weightlifting in 1963 as a 15-year-old boy in Karl-Marx-Stadt . Herbert Svejkovski had created excellent training conditions there. In 1966 he was the GDR Spartakiadeieger in the A-youth with 327.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. Its development continued steadily. In 1967 he was second GDR junior middle-heavyweight champion behind his future rival Helmut Losch from Stralsund with 360 kg and in 1968 he reached first place in the GDR junior middle-heavyweight championship with 407.5 kg. From 1970 he was also used at international championships and achieved many successes. His greatest was without a doubt winning the Olympic bronze medal in the heavyweight division (up to 110 kg body weight at that time) in Munich in 1972 . He was unlucky in 1973 when he was in excellent shape, but had to undergo appendectomy just before the World Championships and was unable to participate.
Work as a trainer
In 1975 Stefan Grützner ended his career as an active weightlifter and became a trainer in Karl-Marx-Stadt, which developed into a real stronghold of weightlifting in the GDR in the 1980s. Until 2013 he worked as a trainer at what would later become the Federal and Olympic Training Center in Chemnitz, where he looked after athletes such as Tom Schwarzbach, Alexander Oberkirsch and Stefan Wenke.
Honors
In 2013 Grützner was awarded the Chemmy for his life's work.
