Helmut Losch

Helmut Losch (born October 12, 1947 in Barth ; † January 10, 2005 in Stralsund ) was a German weightlifter .

Losch was a trained steam locomotive fitter. During his apprenticeship in Stralsund, he came to weightlifting . When BSG Motor Stralsund coaching, he took part in 116 competitions.

Through the stations of GDR youth championship and various domestic competitions, he achieved third place in his first international competition at the European Championships in Sofia in 1971 . He won the gold medal in the pushing discipline at the 1971 World Cup in Lima . This was the first German world title in weightlifting. At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 he was fourth in the heavyweight division (up to 110 kg).

In 1976 Helmut Losch won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight division (over 110 kg) at the Olympic Games in Montreal . He later rated this as his greatest success, especially since the start in this weight class was not actually planned. During his career, which he ended in 1978 with a GDR championship title, Helmut Losch won one gold, five silver and two bronze medals at world championships, five silver and three bronze medals at European championships and also brought three DDR championship titles to Stralsund.

His best performance in a duel was 387.5 kg .

After completing his active career, he continued to campaign for his sport and was a role model for many weightlifters, not only at TSV 1860 Stralsund , the successor to BSG Motor Stralsund . Most recently, the former ship fitter at the Stralsund shipyard worked in the Stralsund workshop for the disabled in the care of the mentally ill. He died of a heart attack at the age of 57 .
