Chemmy

The Chemmy is the award for the "Athlete of the Year" from Chemnitz . Because many of the award-winning athletes are known nationwide and internationally, the “Sport Chemmy” has significance beyond the city limits. The Chemmy is awarded annually at a ball as an honor for the past year.

The award was initiated in 1998 by the former world champions Michael Hübner (track cycling), Thomas Schönlebe and Jens Carlowitz (athletics) and the director Steffen Trautzsch . The honorary sculpture "Chemmy", which symbolizes the industrial past of Chemnitz, was created by the Chemnitz artist Ralph Siebenborn .

The organization team has been working with the Laureus Foundation since 2014 . The foundation supports sports projects that bring children of different social origins and skin color together. The income from a raffle will be collected and used to benefit a Chemnitz association that is socially committed to popular sports.

Categories

Award of the Chemmy 2008 to Matthias Steiner (r.) With the Mayor of Chemnitz Barbara Ludwig (center) and Steiner's partner Inge Posmyk (l.)

The award takes place in the categories "Sportswoman of the Year", "Sportswoman of the Year", "Team of the Year", "Young Athlete of the Year", "Lifetime Achievement" and an "Honorary Chemmy" for exceptional, often voluntary commitment in the field of sport .

The jury

The winners in the first five categories are chosen by the sports journalists from Chemnitz, plus the voices of Carlowitz, Hübner and Schönlebe. The “Ehren-Chemmy” is awarded solely by the vote of the event organizers.
