Peter Seifert (politician)
Peter Seifert (born July 27, 1941 in Zwickau ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was Lord Mayor of Chemnitz ( Saxony ) from 1993 to 2006 .
Life
Seifert passed his Abitur in 1959 at the Gerhart Hauptmann Extended Secondary School in Zwickau . He then began studying at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt , which he completed as a graduate engineer . He then worked in the field of computer development and data processing, first at VEB Robotron , then at the Zwönitz measuring device factory . In 1974 he received his doctorate in engineering.
In December 1989 he joined the SPD and in 1990 was elected to the City Council of Chemnitz and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Before that, he had briefly belonged to the city council as a representative of the opposition movements and parties.
Seifert was elected mayor by the Chemnitz City Council in 1993 after Dieter Noll ( CDU , May 1990-1991) and as successor to Joachim Pilz (CDU , 1991-1993) according to the still applicable municipal constitution of the GDR.
According to the new Saxon municipal code , the Lord Mayor was elected directly for the first time in 1994 and Seifert was confirmed in office with over 73% of the votes. In 2001 he was re-elected with almost 70%.
In 2000 the right-wing extremist city councilor Martin Kohlmann (Pro Chemnitz) accused Seifert of having "belittled" an air attack on Chemnitz during World War II . Thereupon Seifert insulted Kohlmann, for which he was later sentenced to pay compensation to Kohlmann.
Seifert left office on July 31, 2006 after 13 years and retired for health reasons. His successor was Barbara Ludwig (SPD).
Seifert is Chairman of the University Council and the Society of Friends of Chemnitz University of Technology and President of the LAC Erdgas Chemnitz .
Seifert is married and has two sons.
Honors
28 May 2011 he was awarded the Saxon Landtag President Matthias Roessler "in recognition of his responsible activities for his many years of successful work, especially in the Chemnitz local politics" the Saxon Constitutional Medal . On October 15, 2012, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class by the Saxon Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich in recognition of his work for the city of Chemnitz . The city of Chemnitz made him an honorary citizen in 2016.
