Sophie Scheder (born January 7, 1997 in Wolfsburg ) is a German gymnast . Her specialty is the uneven bars , on which she won the bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games .

Athletic career

Sophie Scheder was born in Wolfsburg and began gymnastics at an early age at VfL Wolfsburg, for which she also competed in her first competitions. She then moved to Hanover for TK Hanover and achieved initial successes at the federal level. At the age of 11 she moved to Chemnitz in order to get optimal training conditions for her advancement. Sophie Scheder was a student at the sports high school in Chemnitz . She has been with the Bundeswehr Sports Promotion Group since November 2014 and starts for the TUS 1861 Chemnitz-Altendorf . She trains with Gabi Frehse at the Chemnitz Olympic Training Center.

In 2009 and 2010, Sophie Scheder won the German Cup with the team. For the first time, she also won the all-around competition at the German Youth Championship in 2009 and also took 3rd place on the vault. In 2011 she was again German youth champion when she won the competitions in all around and in jumping . In the same year she took 3rd place with the team at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF for short) in Trabzon.

In 2012 Sophie Scheder won four titles at the German Youth Championships. In the same year she won the European Youth Championships in Brussels on the uneven bars. At the European Championships in 2013 , she took fourth place on the uneven bars. A month later, she also won her first German championship title among adults on her showpiece. At the World Championships in Antwerp , she also achieved fifth place on the uneven bars in 2013 - a placement that a German gymnast last achieved in 2007.

In 2014 she was again fifth on the uneven bars at the European Championships , and she also achieved 1st place in the "Team Challenge" at the DTB Cup. At the 2015 European Games , she won the silver medal with the team and on the uneven bars.

In 2016, Scheder won the DTB Cup World Cup in Stuttgart and German champion in the all-around competition in Hamburg. On August 14, 2016, she celebrated the greatest success of her career when she won bronze on the uneven bars at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Before that she was 6th in the team final and 23rd in the all-around competition.
