At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , 14 gymnastics competitions were held from 6 to 16 August 2016 in the HSBC Arena , which during the Games was called the Rio Olympic Arena for sponsorship reasons , six for women and eight for men . There were decisions in the individual and in the team in the all-around as well as ten device finals.

qualification

192 athletes took part in the competitions, 96 women and 96 men. Twelve teams of five athletes each qualified for each gender. There were also 36 individual starters. The main qualifying competition was the 2015 World Cup in Glasgow . In addition, a second qualifying competition was held for the first time. The qualification criteria applied to both women and men.

Team qualification

The best eight teams in the World Cup qualified directly. The teams in places 9-16 then fought in the qualifying competition from April 16 to 19, 2016 for the last four open places.

Individual qualification

For the individual competition, the best 24 teams in the world championship each received two quota places for their NOK , if athletes were not already qualified via the team. The medal winners on the machines at the World Cup and the four best athletes in the qualifying competition were also given personal starting rights if they were not qualified via the team. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) also guaranteed at least two starters from America , Asia , Africa , Europe and one from Oceania , if no athletes qualified regularly. One starting place was reserved for Brazil as host in the event that no athletes qualified. The FIG was able to award a starting place by invitation to a NOK who could not qualify for the Olympic competitions.

Two athletes each from the eight teams that had already qualified at the World Championships, all gold medalists and one athlete from the host were allowed to take part in the qualifying competition, but their results remained irrelevant for the qualification.
