Marcel Van Minh Phuc Long Nguyen ( [ŋwiɜn 315 ] ? / I ) (born September 8, 1987 in Munich ) is a German gymnast . His special disciplines, in which he was three times European champion , are parallel bars and all-around. By winning the silver medals on parallel bars and in the all-around at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he is one of the most successful German gymnastics athletes . Audio file / audio sample

From July 2007 to September 2014, Nguyen was a sports soldier in the sports promotion group of the German Armed Forces , most recently in the rank of sergeant , and trained in Stuttgart with Valeri Belenki . Until 2012, Nguyen competed for his home club TSV Unterhaching and in the Bundesliga for KTV Straubenhardt . On January 1, 2013, he moved to MTV Stuttgart . Marcel Nguyen returned to KTV Straubenhardt on December 23, 2014.

Career

Marcel Nguyen, the son of a Vietnamese and a German, was born in Munich and began gymnastics at the age of four, and when he was seven he joined TSV Unterhaching . From 1995 he trained at the state performance center in Munich with coach Kurt Szilier. Since 1997 Nguyen has been part of the perspective squad, in which Andreas Hirsch and Jens Milbradt were his coaches. He quickly rose from the D to the B squad. Since 2002 he started for the junior national team. The Isar Sports High School in Munich provided for his school education . In 2005 Nguyen became German junior champion on parallel bars, runner-up on rings and third in jumping . In the same year he took part in the men's world championships for the first time in Melbourne and was 16th on the parallel bars. After the World Cup, Nguyen moved to the sports boarding school in Stuttgart for a year to prepare for the 2006 World Championships in Aarhus with his national team colleagues under coaches Anatoli Jarmovski and Klaus Nigl . At these world championships, the team took seventh place.

After the 2006 World Championships, Nguyen moved back to the sports high school in Munich, where he graduated from high school in June 2007 . A few months later he took part with the team in the World Championships in Stuttgart and won the bronze medal there, which also meant the qualification of the gymnastics team for the Olympic Games . At the end of the year Nguyen was third on the ground at the World Cup in Tokyo. In 2008 Nguyen reached second place with the German team at the European Championships in Lausanne . At the German Championships he was on the podium three times. The highlight was the Olympic Games in Beijing , where the German team had to admit defeat to the USA in the battle for the bronze medal. In 2009, Nguyen was able to record his first successes as an all-rounder: He took second place at the Champions Trophy in Stuttgart, as well as in the subsequent DM. In the same year he also won the German championship with his Bundesliga club KTV Straubenhardt . At the European Championships in Birmingham in 2010 , Marcel Nguyen was a member of the German team that won the title for the first time. He also won bronze on the floor. At the European Gymnastics Championships in Berlin in 2011 , Nguyen was the first German to win the gold medal on parallel bars after Helmut Bantz in 1955 . In the individual competition on parallel bars, he was also able to win silver behind the Chinese Feng Zhe . Here, too, a German gymnast, Sven Tippelt, won an Olympic medal at the 1988 Olympic Games , 24 years ago. In April 2013, Nguyen won the overall ranking of the World Cup series. At the individual European championships in 2013 he narrowly missed the bronze medal on bars with 15,500 points, which the Russian Dawid Beljawski (15,533) secured. In the final on the rings he only finished eighth. He did not take part in the 2013 World Gymnastics Championships for reasons of regeneration.

At the European Championships in 2014 , he reached fourth place with the team, but could not qualify for any of the individual finals. In the summer Nguyen became German champion on parallel bars and rings at the home championships in Stuttgart , this also served as qualification for the world championships in Nanning , in which he could not participate due to a torn cruciate ligament .

In September 2015 Nguyen celebrated his comeback at the German Championships in Giessen . He defended his titles on parallel bars and rings and qualified for the World Championships in Glasgow . There he missed direct Olympic qualification with the German team. The DTB team then secured this at the Olympic test event in April 2016.

At the European Championships in Bern in 2016 , Marcel Nguyen won the bronze medal on bars with 15.566 points. In June 2016, Nguyen won his seventh German championship title on the rings. He was beaten on bars for the first time since 2009. His Unterhachingen team-mate Lukas Dauser won the gold medal here, Nguyen came second on parallel bars and, like in 2009, 2011 and 2012, second in the all-around competition. After he took second place in the second internal Olympic qualification, the German Gymnastics Federation nominated him for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There Nguyen took seventh place in the team all-around final. During his exercise on parallel bars, he presented a new element as a world first, which was included in the Code de Pointage as "The Nguyen". He only missed the bar final by 0.001 points. In the all-around finals, he finished in 19th place as the best German.

In April 2017, Nguyen took part in the European Championships in Cluj . As the best of the qualification on parallel bars, he finished the final in 6th place. At the German Championships as part of the German Gymnastics Festival 2017, Marcel Nguyen secured his seventh title on parallel bars and on rings. He is one of the best German gymnasts in history on these machines.

At the 2017 World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal , Canada , Marcel Nguyen scored 14,700 points in the finals on bars, finishing seventh.

At the German Gymnastics Championships in 2019 , he was able to win the gold medal on parallel bars for the ninth time and became the German floor gymnastics champion for the first time.
