After Kōhei Uchimura's faulty departure from the
pommel horse, the Japanese team was originally shown in fourth place in the final accounts. After a protest by the Japanese team management and multiple video studies by the judges, Uchimura's pommel horse exercise was subsequently raised by 0.7 points and the team was downgraded to second place. It was the first time that such a correction had an impact on the Olympic medal decision.

Qualification criteria

196 athletes took part in the competitions, 98 women and 98 men each. Twelve teams of five athletes each qualified for each gender. There were also 38 individual starters. The main qualifying competition was the 2011 World Championships , which took place from October 8 to 16, 2011 in Tokyo . In addition, a second qualifying competition was held for the first time from January 10th to 13th, 2012, which also functioned as a test competition because, like the Olympic competitions, it was held in the O₂ arena in London. The qualification criteria applied to both women and men.

The best eight teams from the World Championships qualified directly. The teams in places 9 to 16 then fought for the last four open places in the qualifying competition. For the individual competition, the best all-rounders of the qualifying competition were given personal starting positions, if not athletes were already qualified via the team. The medal winners of the device finals of the world championships also received personal starting rights. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) also guaranteed at least two starters from America , Asia , Africa , Europe and one from Oceania , if no athletes could qualify regularly. Great Britain was reserved as host in each case if no athletes could qualify. The FIG was allowed to award a starting place by invitation.

Two athletes from each of the eight teams that had already qualified at the World Championships, all gold medalists and one athlete from the host were allowed to take part in the qualification competition (as a test competition), but their results remained irrelevant for the qualification.
