Career

McKayla Maroney began to do gymnastics intensively at the age of 9. In 2011 she became national champion on her special device, the jump . She finished the all-around in second place.

Gymnastics World Championships 2011

She was then nominated for the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo , where she was able to achieve first place both on the jump and in the team all- around competition. In June 2012, she injured herself at the national championships warming up. She suffered a slight concussion and a broken nose, but was able to participate in the preliminary rounds for the Olympic Games in London a month later .

2012 Summer Olympics

At these games she won the gold medal in the team competition. She showed an almost perfect jump. For her two jumps, she received an average execution grade of 9,733, which is the highest grade achieved at the Olympics or World Championships since the new rating system was introduced. In the individual competition on vault, she won silver behind the Romanian Sandra Izbașa . She was the big favorite in this competition and was clearly in the lead after the first round, but fell on the second jump. She later announced that she had to play the Games with a broken toe. In a post-Olympic show competition in September 2012, Maroney broke his shin and had to take several months off. She only competed again in June 2013. In August of the same year she won gold medals on the vault and on the ground at the national championships.

Gymnastics World Championships 2013

At the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp in 2013 , she won gold on vault.

This made her the first American gymnast to defend her world title on vaults. It should also be her last gymnastics competition. At the World Championships in Nanning in 2014 and in Glasgow in 2015 , she was unable to compete due to an injury. She had to undergo knee surgery in early 2014, after which she was no longer able to achieve her previous level of performance.

Resignation from top sport in 2016

On February 24, 2016, she announced her retirement from top-class sport due to persistent health problems.

Maroney began to dabble in actress even during her sports career. From 2012 she played minor roles in the television series Hart of Dixie , Bones and Superstore . She was also featured in the music video for the song Up in the Air by the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars . After retiring from top-class sport, she announced that she wanted to get into music and become a pop singer. On March 7, 2020, she released the single Wake Up Call .

Memes

“McKayla is not impressed” at the reception of the US gymnastics team by President Obama , November 2012

When she was presented with the medal following her silver victory in the jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, she could be seen with her arms crossed and her mouth pressed to one side. This picture quickly drew a meme named after her called "McKayla is not impressed", which enjoyed great popularity on the Internet.

Maroney herself later stated that she tried to appear as emotionless as possible, but could not think clearly. In November 2012, Maroney and the US gymnastics team were invited to the White House, where she and then US President Barack Obama recreated the facial expressions of the "McKayla is not impressed" photo.

Abuse in the US gymnastics team

In October 2017, as part of the #MeToo campaign , she made public that she had been sexually abused by then US team doctor Larry Nassar from the age of 13 until the end of her sports career . He had previously been charged with sexual harassment by other women.

In December 2017, Maroney filed a lawsuit against the American Artistic Gymnastics Federation and the US Olympic Committee (USOC). She accuses the association of having paid her hush money.
