Aliso Viejo is a US city in southern Orange County in the US state of California . It has about 48,000 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of approximately 18 km². On July 1, 2001, Aliso Viejo became the 34th city in Orange County . It is the only foundation in the county since 2000. The city is surrounded by Laguna Beach in the west and southwest, Laguna Hills in the east, Laguna Niguel in the southeast and Laguna Woods in the north.

geography

Much of the city is located on the eastern slopes of the San Joaquin Hills. According to the Census Bureau , the city has an area of almost 18 m². Aliso Viejo is one of several cities that border the Aliso and Wood Canyons Regional Park . The brook Aliso Creek marks the city limits to Laguna Niguel in the south and the brook Wood Canyon Creek partly marks the western city limit.

history

The originally planned community area was once part of an over 100 km² ranch , the Moulton Ranch. This area was acquired by the Moulton family from Juan Avila in the 1890s. This in turn received the area in 1842 from the Mexican government. Little by little, parts of the ranch were sold, so that the cities of Leisure World (now Laguna Woods ), Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel could arise. In 1976, the Mission Viejo Company bought the remaining 17 square miles of Moulton Ranch to build a re-planned community. In their drafts, the planners envisaged 20,000 houses for 50,000 residents. The designs were approved by the county in 1979 . The first houses were offered for sale in March 1982, and the first family moved in in November of the same year. As part of the project, 10.5 km² was dedicated to the county as part of the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park . Another 3.2 km² were reserved for use as neighborhood parks, for local recreation or other public use. To manage these uses, the Aliso Viejo Community Association (AVCA) was established in 1982.

Aliso Viejo was the first planned church in California that stipulated that there would be the same number of newly created jobs as planned inflows of able-bodied people. Pacific Park, the 3.5 km² city and commercial center of Aliso Viejo, should create more than 22,000 jobs. All houses in the city are within 1.5 miles of Pacific Park. This distance was chosen deliberately in order to encourage work close to home.

Incorporation

Aliso Viejo had been a municipality free since 1979. The city was only incorporated in 2001 after the Aliso Viejo Cityhood 2000 Committee had campaigned for a corresponding citizens' vote. In the election, 93.3% of voters voted for incorporation. The committee's co-founder and president, Carmen Vali-Cave, became the city's first female mayor.
