At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital, London , from July 28th to August 9th, six equestrian competitions were held in Greenwich Park , one individual and one team decision in dressage , show jumping and eventing .

Women and men have traditionally measured each other together. The competition program in show jumping and eventing was identical to that of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing / Hong Kong , but the procedure for dressage was changed.

Changes in the program

In show jumping and eventing there was no change from the last Olympic Games. In dressage, however, the program was changed significantly: The individual evaluation was decided exclusively in the Grand Prix Freestyle . The team ranking was decided on the basis of the arithmetic mean of the results of the Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial .

Due to the tight schedule in London, a shortened Grand Prix Spécial was ridden out, which will be used at international tournaments from October 1, 2011 until the end of 2012. Since this shortened test could not convince the riders, the old Grand Prix Spécial will be reintroduced after the Olympic Games.

"It was good to have ridden the new special in a test and I can already say - I'm not looking forward to the next time."

- Ulla Salzgeber on the shortened Grand Prix Spécial

Nicola Wilson and opposition Buzz on the course of the 2012 Olympics

The eventing rider's program began on the first official day of competition (Saturday, July 28, 2012) with the discipline of dressage. This continued on July 29th. On both days the rides took place between 10:00 a.m. and around 4:30 p.m. local time.

One day later, on July 30th, the field test was held between 12:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. local time. Participating athletes and coaches described this in advance as a relatively short route with very steep ascents and descents, and the time allowed was very tight. Another special feature were often low-hanging branches, as the trees, as part of the Greenwich Park World Heritage Site, were only allowed to be pruned to a very limited extent.

The team competition took place on July 31st between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Up to this point, individual and team competitions have been held in the same competition. While the team competition was decided after the team competition, an individual competition followed. This was carried out from 2:30 p.m. local time and is due to the Olympic rule that no two medals should be awarded for the same performance.

Partial dressage test

After the first day of dressage Ingrid Klimke and Butts Abraxxas were in the lead in the individual ranking. With a value of 39.30 minus points, however, she clearly missed her record of the last European championships of 30.00 minus points. Dirk Schrade came in second with King Artus (39.80 minus points) ahead of Mary King with 40.90 minus points.

After the first day of the tournament was accompanied by bright sunshine, the weather worsened significantly the following day. The test had to be temporarily interrupted due to heavy rain and an approaching thunderstorm.

After the end of the second dressage day, before the cross-country course, the Japanese rider Yoshiaki Ōiwa, trained by Dirk Schrade , led with 38.10 minus points, Schrade himself was in sixth place. In second place was Stefano Brecciaroli , who was the best non-German individual rider last year at the European Championships in fifth place in the final ranking. Third place went to the experienced Mark Todd . The previous day's leader, Ingrid Klimke, shared fourth place with the Swede Sara Algotsson-Ostholt with Wega with 39.30 minus points.

In the team standings, the German team led by a narrow margin of three minus points.

Zara Phillips with High Kingdom at the water jump, off-road course of the 2012 Olympic Games

Partial test terrain

Right at the beginning of the test, which was classified as difficult due to the mountainousness and the tight time, a faultless ride succeeded. The Australian rider Christopher Burton had a faultless cross-country ride with his horse Leilani without a minus point. Overall, nine out of 74 starters managed to finish the area without any further negative points.

Nevertheless, the off-road course clearly showed its difficulty. 15 riders were eliminated, such as the previous day leader Yoshiaki Oiwa. Clayton Fredericks, one of the favorites, also dropped out due to a fall, while his wife Lucinda Fredericks had a runaway when jumping in the water (20 minus points, an additional 18 minus points by exceeding the permitted time).

The teams of Japan and Canada each had to record three riders eliminated due to refusals or falls, so these teams could no longer provide a complete team result (for which three riders would have been required). This also applied to the Dutch team, which consisted of only three riders, one of whom did not finish the cross-country course.

Before the first jump, the German team had a lead of slightly over an obstacle release (5.50 minus points). The gaps between places two to four were very small.

Sandra Auffarth and Opgun Louvo jumping through the last obstacle of the cross-country course of the 2012 Olympic Games

Final results

After the "vet check" (the veterinary control) on the morning of the final day of the eventing competitions, 59 horse-rider pairs started in team jumping. After Peter Thomsen had to record eight minus points, the following three German riders (Dirk Schrade, Sandra Auffarth and Michael Jung) each managed a faultless round. Since the competing teams had to score some minus points beforehand, Jungs Ritt already brought the no longer to be taken lead for the German team.

The penultimate starter, Kristina Cook, managed a faultless ride on the show jumping course with her gelding Miners Frolic and only had one minus point for exceeding the time. The silver medal went to the British team. Ingrid Klimke concluded the first jumping competition with her horse Butts Abraxxas , whose weakness is show jumping. Both finished the jumping competition with nine minus points for two obstacle drops and exceeding the time limit.

The team medals were presented by Princess Anne , including her daughter Zara Phillips as part of the British team.

After a break, the decision about the individual medals was made. For this purpose, another jumping competition with a different course was held for the best 25 riders. However, the regulations stipulated that only three starters per participating nation were allowed to compete in this round. As a result, Dirk Schrade (previously 10th place), William Fox-Pitt (16th place), Nicola Wilson (21st place) and Caroline Powell (25th place) were no longer allowed to compete and in the final ranking Places 26 to 29.

Due to the well-known weakness of Ingrid Klimke's horse Butts Abraxxas in the jumping competition , it was already considered before the Olympic Games to give up Klimke in the individual jumping in favor of another German rider. When this situation arose in London, Klimke withdrew in favor of Dirk Schrade, who was placed just behind her, to give him a start. However, since the regulations did not provide for such a possibility, the starting field in the final competition only comprised 24 riders.

Sandra Auffarth was the first German starter to start here. With a round without additional minus points, she was able to hold her fifth place and still hope for an improvement. The British riders Kristina Cook and Mary King started after her, each with eight minus points. Sandra Auffarth thus secured the bronze medal at her first Olympic Games.

As the penultimate starter Michael Jung started with Sam and again achieved a faultless lap. Sara Algotsson-Ostholt started after him, who now had the chance to become the first woman ever to become an individual Olympic champion in eventing. She stayed clear until the last obstacle, but had to record a throw there. Michael Jung, who celebrated his 30th birthday on this day, also won the individual gold medal. This makes him the first rider in the history of eventing to be the reigning Olympic champion, world and European champion in the individual standings.

Results dressage

In the team competition, the teams consisted of three riders with their horses, as they did four years earlier. In addition to their team riders , individual NOKs were also able to qualify an additional individual starter outside the team.

The first dressage test at the Games in London was the Grand Prix de Dressage . This formed the first partial test of the team classification and also served as a qualification test for the individual starters. It was held on August 2nd and 3rd between 11:00 am and 3:30 pm local time.

The second test was the Grand Prix Spécial . It was played on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. local time. The riders of the best seven teams and eleven other individual starters qualified for this. The results of the Grand Prix Spécial also counted exclusively for the team evaluation, for the individual evaluation they were only relevant as qualification for the next test, the Grand Prix Freestyle . The team result was determined from the average of the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Spécial.

The individual decision was made in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Only the 18 best participants from the Grand Prix Spécial were allowed to start here.

The international judging panel consisted of the three dressage tests of Maribel Alonso de Quinzanos (Mexico), Stephen Clarke (United Kingdom), Evi Eisenhardt (Germany), Wim Ernes (Netherlands), Gary Rockwell (United States), Jean-Michel Roudier (France) and Leif Törnblad (Denmark). The chief judges at track marking C were Rockwell in the Grand Prix de Dressage, Törnblad in the Grand Prix Special and Clarke in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Team ranking

In the team standings, the British team took the lead after the Grand Prix de Dressage, but initially this was only around 0.5 percent of the team average. In the Grand Prix Spécial, however, Charlotte Dujardin (who already achieved a result of over 83 percent in the Grand Prix de Dressage) also achieved her team mate Carl Hester with Uthopia a result of over 80 percent. In contrast, the young German team could not quite repeat their very strong result from the Grand Prix de Dressage, all three riders stayed below 79 percent with their horses. This enabled the British team to expand their lead on average to over 1.7 percent and thus clearly won the gold medal.

Medal handover, team evaluation of dressage riders

This was the first ever victory for a British dressage team at the Olympics. Still, this victory was not unexpected. Already in 2011 a strengthening of new British couples could be observed, which culminated in the team gold medal European Championships in Dressage 2011 . The end of the German winning streak (with the exception of the Olympic boycott in 1980 , with the exception of the Olympic boycott in 1980, the teams in the Federal Republic of Germany had won Olympic team gold without interruption) was nevertheless not considered a defeat in the specialist press, by players and officials. The German dressage committee chairman, Klaus Roeser, summed up: "That's why we won silver and not lost gold."

The Dutch team also made it into the top group, about one percent behind Germany on average. What was remarkable about the Dutch team was the ownership structure of the horses: two thirds of the horses, Gaston Glock ( Undercover ) and Herbert Jerich ( Parzival ), are Austrian owners or co-owners. Austria itself was only able to qualify two individual riders and therefore did not take part in the team classification.

The other four teams in the Grand Prix Spécial were largely the same in the final result, the average of all rides from the Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial. These were the teams from Spain, the United States, Sweden and Denmark who averaged between 72.287 and 73.846 percent.

The teams from Poland and Australia did not qualify for the Grand Prix Spécial, each remaining under 69 percent in the Grand Prix de Dressage. The Olympic Games were already over for the Canadian team at the Grand Prix de Dressage: Capital , David Marcus's horse, was very impressed by the atmosphere of the riding arena and panicked, so that the rider was rang and disqualified.

Individual evaluation

The decision of the individual valuation in the dressage was made in the Grand Prix Freestyle between the 18 best participants from the Grand Prix Spécial. For this only the result of the Grand Prix Freestyle counted.

In the freestyle, the German dressage riders had little luck and got three starting places in a row in the middle of the starting field. The situation was even more unfavorable for Victoria Max-Theurer, who was drawn to fifth out of 18 starting places. Max-Theurer and her self- bred stallion Augustin achieved 79.053 percent, which meant 13th place and thus her best Olympic result so far. The German Olympic debutants achieved fourth, seventh and eighth places in the final with results of over 80 percent. A total of nine starter pairs managed to achieve a result of over 80 percent in the freestyle.

Laura Bechtolsheimer was the penultimate starter and managed to sit in front of the first leader, Helen Langehanenberg. She owed this to the artistic B grade of her freestyle, in the technical A grade the better grades were given to Langehanenberg. In the Grand Prix Freestyle, Carl Hester was unable to match his top result in the Grand Prix Spécial and got 82.857 percent with Uthopia , but only 77.716 percent in the A grade.

Adelinde Cornelissen, who started with Parzival as the penultimate couple, stood out for the judges clearly from the performances shown so far and received a rating of 88.196 percent, which meant a lead of almost four percent. Charlotte Dujardin started as the final rider. With Valegro, she had a clear mistake in her ride shortly before the end, but at this point she had already built up a clear lead over Cornelissen. Even the mistake could not change anything in their lead, they won with almost two percent advantage.

The chief judge of the test, Stephen Clarke from the United Kingdom, justified Dujardin's victory: “With Adelinde Cornelissen's horse we missed the lightness and the self-holding. Today it was a decision for the harmony of Charlotte and Valegro. ”This justified the victory, although many observers had considered Cornelissen's ride to be more athletic and expressive.

According to Evi Eisenhardt (dressage judge at the Grand Prix Freestyle), Helen Langehanenberg narrowly missed a medal due to a mistake in a piaffe. The evaluation of the Danish dressage judge Leif Törnblad, the judge at the track marking K , caused a bland aftertaste . This judged all starters consistently about one to two percent lower than his fellow judges, but with Helen Langehanenberg it was 4.125 percent below the lowest rating of his fellow judges. At Kristina Sprehe, too, this gap was three percent.

Results jumping

In contrast to many championships, the Olympic show jumping competitions did not start with a time jumping test , but with a jumping test based on mistakes . This first exam took place on August 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. local time. The result of this test was initially included in the individual ranking, but was only relevant for the team ranking for the starting order.

One day and two days later, the second and third partial exams started. This was the Nations Cup, which consisted of two jumping competitions after mistakes. Different courses had to be contested on both days. On the first day of the Nations Cup, the best 60 individual riders and all team riders who were not among the best 60 from the first test were allowed to start. On the second day of the Nations Cup, the eight best teams from the previous day as well as all riders up to 45th place in the previous individual evaluation results were allowed to start. The team ranking was decided on the basis of the results of the two Nations Cup rounds.

Obstacles in the Olympic show jumping course

On August 8th the decision about the individual evaluation followed. Before this day, for which the best 35 individual riders qualified, all penalty points from the previous rounds were deleted (all riders started again with zero penalty points). However, only three riders were allowed per nation. On this day the riders had to contest a jumping competition with two rounds with their horses . The 20 best riders of the first round qualified for the second round of the test.

The course designer in London was the Briton Bob Ellis. The obstacles on the course were based on London motifs such as the neighboring National Maritime Museum and Trafalgar Square, but also motifs from British history such as Stonehenge or the Magna Carta .

Team ranking

After the first round of the team competition, the Saudi Arabia team was in the lead with one penalty point. Together with four penalty points, the teams from Switzerland, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden found themselves in second place. The teams from Canada (sixth place) and Brazil (seventh place) as well as the US team (also seventh) were also qualified for the second round.

Without a faultless round one of their riders, the gold and silver medal winners of the last European championships in the team classification, Germany (tenth place) and France (twelfth place) were eliminated.

The second round of the Nations Cup turned out to be even more difficult than the first round. Many riders had to book two or more obstacle drops (and thus eight or more penalty points) on their point account. Accordingly, the gap between the remaining teams was also greater than was the case on the first Nations Cup day.

The Brazilian team rider José Roberto Reynoso Fernandez Filho had to cope with a disgraceful round . With his gelding Maestro St. Lois , he had already collected a number of penalty points through drops shortly before the end of the course. When he approached a plank jump, the upper part fell out of the support without contact. The ride was interrupted and the plank put back on. Reynoso Fernandez finished the test with 46 penalty points. Since the Brazilian team was already reduced to three riders, this result counted for the team, which only came in eighth.

After the British final result had already been determined with eight penalty points, of the remaining teams only the Dutch team had a chance of winning the gold medal. Gerco Schröder had a goalkeeper throw as the final rider, so that the Netherlands also got eight penalty points. A lancing became necessary.

The specialty of this jump-off was its regulations. Unlike in normal Nations Cups, all riders of the two teams had to start, there was no cancellation result. After it became clear after the four British rides in the jump-off that the British team could no longer be overtaken, Gerco Schröder decided not to start in the jump-off.

Individual evaluation

Qualification exams

For the second day of the Nations Cup, all Swiss riders were not only qualified via the team classification, they were also among the best 45 riders at that time. The German riders Janne Friederike Meyer, Marcus Ehning and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum were also among the best 45 riders, who were allowed to start as individual riders on the second day of the Nations Cup.

Christian Ahlmann was no longer eligible to compete in the individual competition; he was already eliminated from the individual competition in the first jumping competition with 15 penalty points (69th place).

Unlucky on the first day of the Nations Cup was Simon Delestre , whose reins broke before the last obstacle. So he was denied a clear lap, but he managed to overcome the final obstacle with his horse Napoli du Ry in the second attempt, despite broken reins . The reason for the decimation of the Canadian team was the disqualification of Tiffany Foster's horse Victor . Before the first part of the team test, a thermographic examination revealed hypersensitivity on the left forehand. Therefore the horse was excluded from the competition as not fit to compete . It was a small wound at the site of the finding, there was no evidence of manipulation.

Singles final and final result

Even before the start of the individual final, the test for a favorite was over: Casall , Rolf-Göran Bengtsson's Olympic horse , was paralyzed at the vet check. Thereupon Bengtsson, world number leader and reigning individual European champion, withdrew his horse from the test.

In the first round of the individual jumping, the German team rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum with Bella Donna and the 2008 Olympic champion, Eric Lamaze with Derly Chin de Muze, each had eight penalty points. With this result, it was the last ride at the 2012 Olympic Games for these starter pairs, only the riders with results of five or less penalty points made it to the second round.

The second round of the individual final turned out to be very difficult, only four out of 21 starters managed to stay clear here. Three riders each from Switzerland and Great Britain qualified for this round. Ian Millar achieved ninth place with a total of eight penalty points at his tenth Olympic Games - an Olympic record .

A total of four riders started the second round with only one penalty point. Among them was Pius Schwizer, who had to score eight penalty points with Carlina and thus fell back. Gerco Schröder, who made a mistake with London and thus initially took the lead, also started with a penalty point . The first of six riders who started this round without penalty points was Cian O'Connor, who had only received a starting place for London shortly before the games. He stayed clear over the obstacles with Blue Loyd , but had to score a time penalty as he exceeded the time limit by two hundredths of a second. Marcus Ehning, Oliver Guillon , Scott Brash and Nick Skelton , who is often considered a potential Olympic champion, were also unable to maintain their faultless result. Not so Steve Guerdat, who with Nino des Buissonnets was the only one to make the double clear in the individual finals. The individual Olympic victory for Guerdat was already certain.

However, it was not decided who would win silver and bronze, Gerco Schröder and Cian O'Connor had to compete for the other medal ranks. Schröder, who went into the jump-off first, showed a smoothly ridden lap and crossed the finish line with London in 49.79 seconds. O'Connor rode much faster with Blue Loyd and got ahead of the last jump, but tore the obstacle and therefore had to be satisfied with the bronze medal.

50 riders were allowed to take part in the dressage competitions, including at least eleven teams with three riders each, all of whom also compete individually. The number of teams could have increased if a NOK had won three individual quota places. A team from Great Britain was automatically qualified to host.

The top three teams qualified at the 2010 World Equestrian Games. At the European Championships 2011, the three best teams were added again. The two best teams of the Pan American Games 2011 were also qualified. Two teams from the continental zones Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Oceania qualified in two qualifying tournaments. These took place in October and November 2011 in Australia and the Netherlands. The last 17 quota places were then awarded by means of the FEI Olympic ranking. The best placed riders qualified, including at least one from each of the seven continental zones (South-West Europe, North-West Europe, East Europe / Central Asia, Africa / Middle East, South East Asia / Oceania, North America, Central / South America). The eight best results at official tournaments between March 1, 2011 and March 1, 2012 were included in this ranking. If a NOK, which had already won quota places for a team or three individual starters, again achieved a placement that guaranteed quota places, this was awarded to the next NOK without a quota place.

Since New Zealand, which had qualified a team, only sent two riders to London, another individual starter moved up according to the FEI Olympic ranking. This was the Polish rider Michał Rapcewicz , which meant that Poland (who had already qualified two riders) was able to provide a dressage team.

No rider from Colombia, which qualified in the Prix St. Georges level dressage competitions of the Pan American Games, took part in the Games in London. The reason for this was that no Colombian rider met the qualification standard. For this, three more individual starters moved up.

Test event

From July 4 to 6, 2011, a test event (Greenwich Park Eventing Invitational) was held in Greenwich Park as part of the “London Prepares series”. It was a short eventing test (CIC 2 *), the victory went to Piggy French with Topper W ahead of Michael Jung with River of Joy . The course of the cross-country course and the ground in the stadium were criticized at the event. But there was also a need for improvement with regard to the spectator guidance and the structure of the site.
