Career

Maikel van der Vleuten is the son of the Dutch show jumper Eric van der Vleuten , who represented the Netherlands three times at World Equestrian Games. Maikel van der Vleuten got his first pony at an early age, but initially also played football. At the age of 12 he concentrated entirely on horse riding. He says he enjoyed going to tournaments with his father, watching other riders there and learning a lot. His younger brother Eric van der Vleuten Junior is also active as a show jumper.

At the age of 13 he won team silver at the European Pony Championships with his pony Super Brat . In 2006 he was named Rabo Talent of the Year as a youth, and in 2010 he received this award again.

From 2004 to 2009 van der Vleuten competed in six European championships: two in the junior age group, four as a young rider. Already in January 2007 he achieved an outstanding success when, at the age of 18, he won the Grand Prix of the Amsterdam World Cup. He repeated this success in 2016.

In 2008 he was at the CSIO 5 * Lisbon for the first time outside of youth sport as a member of a Nations Cup team. In 2011 he was part of the Nations Cup teams of St. Gallen, Falsterbo and Rotterdam. This year he was also nominated for a championship, the European Championships in Madrid , for the first time after the end of his young rider days . In the winter of 2011/2012 he played his first World Cup season, finished second in the Helsinki World Cup with Verdi and finished 20th in the Western European League. As a successor he qualified for the 2012 World Cup final , where he reached seventh place.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , he won the silver medal with the Dutch team, and in the individual he was 37th. From 2013 to 2015 he also competed at the World and European Championships and won two gold medals with the team. He played his second Olympic Games with Verdi in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro .

2017 was a very successful year for van der Vleuten: In five of the 15 special stages of the Global Champions Tour 2017 he came in second or third place, behind his compatriot Harrie Smolders he came in second place in the Global Champions Tour overall ranking. In the Grand Prix of the Spruce Meadows Masters , endowed with 3,000,000 Canadian dollars , he finished sixth with Verdi .

The textile company has been sponsoring Massimo Dutti van der Vleuten since the beginning of 2018, while Marta Ortega (the daughter of Inditex founder Amancio Ortega ) provides him with horses.

Together with his partner, Maikel van der Vleuten has a daughter who was born in December 2017.
