Western European League 2017/2018 (show jumping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping 2017/2018 (Longines FEI World Cup ™ Jumping 2017-2018, Western European League) was the 40th season of the Western and Central European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping . The World Cup is the most important tournament series in the indoor season in the Western European League.

Course of the tournament series

The 2017/2018 World Cup season brought hardly any changes compared to the previous season: the number and locations of the special stages remained unchanged, only Verona and Lyon swapped the order within the calendar. The World Cup started in mid-October 2017, the last stage was on the program at the end of February 2018.

The Swiss watch manufacturer Longines was the name sponsor of the tournament series. All tournaments in the league were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping. They were marked with the suffix -W (i.e. CSI 5 * -W) to identify them as World Cup tournaments. The best 18 riders in the Western European League as well as additional participants (“extra competitors”) qualified for the 2018 World Cup final .

The World Cup special stage was held on Sunday afternoons. Only three tournaments deviated from this: In Bordeaux and Madrid, the World Cup competitions already took place on Saturday evening, in Mechelen it was held every year on the afternoon of December 30th, regardless of the weekday.

The World Cup competitions were announced as jumping competitions with a single jump-off , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. The prize money for each of these tests was at least 100,000 .

media

The FEI broadcast all tests of the Western European League for a fee via its Internet portal FEI TV. In the host country, the World Cup competitions were mostly broadcast live on television, and the other competitions in the Western European League were also shown live or recorded in individual European countries. The pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport 1 broadcast the exams in a 60-minute summary, which was usually shown in the evening on the Monday following the tournament.

The exams

1st test: Oslo

At the start of the Western European Show Jumping League, the evaluation test as part of the Oslo Horse Show was on the program. The horse show took place from October 11-15, 2017 in the Telenor Arena in Oslo .

Last year's winner pair, Alberto Zorzi and Fair Light van't Heike , clearly showed the fastest time of all participants in the normal round, but an obstacle error prevented his entry into the jump-off (ninth place). In eighth place came Michael Whitaker , who with the 10-year-old Calisto Blue was one of the few starters who allowed himself a time penalty, but otherwise remained clear. Seven riders entered the jump-off with their horses.

Here it was Douglas Lindelöw who, with Zacramento as the first starter in the jump-off, made no mistakes. Mark McAuley as the second participant should be one of only two riders who had to accept four penalty points in the jump-off. The lead changed several times, most recently with the penultimate jump-off participant Daniel Deußer. Deusser had already won the Grand Prix of the tournament the day before and also took the lead in the World Cup with the conspicuously drawn gray horse Cornet . Bertram Allen as the final rider tried to take the lead with Izzy by Picobello , but a falling pole at the penultimate jump prevented this.

2nd test: Helsinki

Due to the local weather conditions, the Scandinavian World Cup tournaments take place at the beginning or at the end of the indoor season. This is how the second stage of the Western European League was held there: The Helsinki International Horse Show was held from October 18-22, 2017 . The world cup competition of the tournament held in Helsingin Jäähalli took place on October 22nd from 3:40 pm local time.

Many riders got results of eight or more penalty points in normal circulation, six did not finish the course. The main mistake was the final line consisting of a double combination with a blue and white plank at the jump and an oxer to be ridden from the turn. Nevertheless, nine starter pairs made it into the jump-off.

Also due to the narrow arena the size of an ice hockey rink (approx. 60 × 30 meters), the jump-off was very "twisty" with many tight turns. After the first three jumpers got four or eight penalty points each, Robert Whitaker managed the first clear round with Catwalk IV - which, however, was the slowest of the jump-off. Henrik von Eckermann was almost a second faster, whose mare Mary Lou almost fell after landing after the penultimate jump by sliding away. Von Eckermann was able to prevent this by shifting his weight. On the longer gallop to the last obstacle, the couple found their rhythm again and took the lead in the intermediate rankings. He was followed by Felix Haßmann , who was the only German rider to have made it into the jump-off and, with his gray Cayenne, finished fifth in the final result with the fastest four-point lap.

The last two riders competed with horses from the Dutch VDL Stud. Marlon Modolo Zanotelli crossed the finish line with the 10-year-old mare Celena flawlessly in a time that was slightly slower than Henrik von Eckermann's. The last starter was more than a second faster than the previous leading pair: Jur Vrieling crossed the finish line with Glasgow van't Merelsnest without any mistakes and thus secured victory in the Helsinki World Cup.

3rd test: Verona

Jumping Verona, the Italian world show jumping tournament, took place earlier than in previous years. At the end of October, from October 26th to 29th 2017, the tournament was held as part of the Fieracavalli.

The successful year for the Italian show jumpers continued in the World Cup competition on the final day of the tournament: of the eleven riders who qualified for the jump-off, four started under the Italian flag. The jump-off was opened by Janika Sprunger , who, with 11-year-old Bacardi , had a clear round in 39.21 seconds. The 23-year-old Luigi Polesello attacked Spritzer's time as the second starter, but got two obstacle errors and ended up in tenth place in this test. The next four starters did not cross the finish line without errors either. Lorenzo de Luca was different : Halifax van het Kluizebos , the most successful Italian show jumper at the time, took the lead.

But the lead did not last: Pieter Devos was the next starter to take the lead. The next rider, Maikel van der Vleuten, took first place from him. Alberto Zorzi crossed the finish line without any mistakes, the time close to van der Vleuten's. But the time of the Dutchman and his 15-year-old stallion Verdi was better. Last year’s runner-up Simon Delestre was also unable to win the jump-off as the last starter, Maikel van der Vleuten won the test.

4th test: Lyon

Lyon is the venue for the fourth World Cup of the Western European League this season: The Equitá Lyon was held from November 1st to 5th, 2017 . The venue was the Eurexpo exhibition center . The world cup competition, which is highly endowed with 300,000 euros, was held on November 5th from 3:30 p.m.

The second starter, Holger Wulschner , made it into the jump-off. Ten more riders with their horses were to follow him. In the jump-off, Wulschner rode at a moderate pace with Skipper , but missed the targeted zero round and therefore only came in tenth in the final result. With a time two seconds faster and with no mistakes, Michael Whitaker and Calisto Blue took the lead as second rider. The lead changed again at the next rider, Mark McAuley and Miebello finished a hundredth of a second faster. After further changes at the top, Simon Delestre and Hermes Ryan were in the lead.

While Roger-Yves Bost, the penultimate starter, had nothing to do with the win due to two obstacle errors, it looked different with Henrik von Eckermann: With his 11-year-old mare Mary Lou , he seemed to be able to reach Delestre's time. But he didn't quite succeed, it was second place for von Eckermann in a World Cup competition this season. Simon Delestre, on the other hand, won the test and with it 20 points.

5th exam: Stuttgart

In the middle of November, the first World Cup tournament was on the program, in which, in addition to the Show Jumping World Cup, the dressage riders and the four-in-hand drivers collected World Cup points. The Stuttgart German Masters, the fifth evaluation test of the Western European Show Jumping League, was held from November 15 to 19, 2017.

The World Cup competition in Stuttgart was the Stuttgart Grand Prix, which was held on the last day of the tournament from 3:00 p.m. 16 of the 40 participating riders made it into the jump-off with a zero-error round. There were hardly any mistakes in the jump-off either, so that 13 double clears were recorded. So time had to become the decisive criterion for victory.

Simone Blum had already won the German Master on Friday evening. At her only World Cup start this season (her mare Alice should get a break from the tournament over the winter) she came fourth with 50.14 seconds. While two other German riders were able to place third and second, the victory went to Switzerland. Steve Guerdat won the Stuttgart Grand Prix for the first time.

6th test: Madrid

The first Spanish evaluation test of the Western European League was held at the Madrid Horse Week. The Madrid World Cup was part of the Western European League for the fourth time. The Feria de Madrid was the venue for this tournament, which was held from November 23 to 26, 2017.

In the test, which took place in the late evening of the tournament Saturday (November 25th), there was another oversized jump-off, with 18 horse-rider pairs almost half of the participants in the jump-off. Here, too, it was important for the participants not only to be flawless, but also to master the jump-off course very quickly. Eleven riders crossed the finish line again without penalty points.

It was particularly tight in places two to four, the gap here was only nine hundredths of a second. Roger-Yves Bost was able to set himself apart from this group with Sydney Une Prince . With the 11-year-old chestnut mare, he crossed the finish line in a good four tenths of a second faster and thus secured victory.

7th test: A Coruña

In the season calendar, Madrid was followed by the second stop of the World Cup in Spain. For the second time, the Galician city of A Coruña hosted a special stage of the Western European League. The venue for the tournament was the Centro Hípico Casas Novas, which is owned by Amancio Ortega . In contrast to the other stages, the exams are not carried out in a trade fair or event hall, but in a large (80 × 40 meters) riding arena with a lot of wood.

With a prize money of 330,000 euros, the A Coruña World Cup was one of the most highly endowed of the World Cup season, but it was in competition with the Geneva Grand Prix , which was held at the same time and was three times as much . After big jump-offs predominated at the beginning of the season, this in A Coruña remained within the desired somewhat smaller framework - eight riders qualified for this.

After surprisingly winning the Grand Prix the evening before, Sameh El Dahan from Egypt, who is 129th in the world, also qualified for the jump-off in the World Cup. With Suma's Zorro he had to show up and was very fast with a time of less than 40 seconds. But an obstacle mistake meant that he found himself in fifth place in the final result. Of the first four riders, only the Spaniard Manuel Fernandez Saro managed a zero-error ride. While Denis Lynch with All Star was just as flawless as the fifth starter, even slower than Fernandez Saro, Edwina Tops-Alexander attacked. With the 10-year-old mare California she crossed the finish line in 40.08 seconds without penalty points. Max Kühner as the penultimate starter in the jump-off moved up to second place behind Tops-Alexander, final rider Maikel van der Vleuten had nothing to do with the victory.

8th test: London

The third weekend in Advent took the Show Jumping World Cup to London: The Olympia London International Horse Show , which traditionally ends on the Monday before Christmas, took place from December 12 to 18, 2017 in the Olympia Grand Hall in London .

The world cup competition was held in the festively decorated hall on the afternoon of the penultimate day of the tournament. Only four riders managed a zero-error ride with their horses in normal circulation and thus made it into the jump-off. In this Peder Fredricson had to present, without mistakes he crossed the finish line with Christian K in 41.34 seconds. The three following riders should also have no penalty points: Edwina Tops-Alexander was slightly faster and thus secured the second top placement in a World Cup competition within two weeks. Scott Brash was four seconds faster than Fredricson, giving hope for a home win. But Julien Epaillard even stayed under 37 seconds with the 10-year-old mare Toupie de la Roque and thus secured victory.

9th test: Mechelen

At the end of 2017, the riders competed in the Belgian World Cup stage: As every year, the indoor riding tournament Jumping Mechelen - Vlaanderens Kerstjumping took place in Mechelen from December 26th to 30th .

In the World Cup competition, which started on December 30th around 4 p.m., seven clear rounds were recorded in normal circulation. Two German riders started the jump-off: Christian Ahlmann and his 17-year-old stallion Taloubet Z set a fast time of less than 39 seconds, but an obstacle error earned him four penalty points. Daniel Deußer did not manage the jump-off course with Cornet D'Amour quite as quickly, but without mistakes. Henrik von Eckermann and Mary Lou initially seemed to conquer the course in a similar time as Deußer, but increased the pace on the final line and crossed the finish line in 38.74 seconds without mistakes. The fourth jump-off participant brought the third change in leadership: The Dutchman Harrie Smolders, who trained in Grobbendonk , 30 kilometers away , was Zinius more than half a second faster than Eckermann. Three other starters could not push Smolders from first place.

10th exam: Leipzig

The Western European League kicked off the year 2018 with the second show jumping World Cup in Germany: The Partner Horse was held from January 18 to 21, 2018 at the Leipzig Exhibition Center. The tournament's world cup competition was the grand prize held on the last day of the tournament.

Of the 40 riders in the test, 27 got a result of four or less penalty points. 15 of them made the jump-off due to a zero-error ride. In the jump-off, Maurice Tebbel had to show , as the first starter he crossed the finish line with Chaccos' Son with four penalty points. Slower but without a mistake, Douglas Lindelöw took the lead as the second starter , riding the 13-year-old gelding Zacramento . The next change in leadership did not take place until the eighth rider in the jump-off, Kevin Staut took the lead with Reveur de Hurtebise with a time of 44.39 seconds. On the following ride, Marcus Ehning and Comme Il Faut took the lead, he was again a tenth of a second faster. Subsequently, the lead changed to Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo.

Christian Ahlmann and his 18-year-old stallion Taloubet Z had the last starting place in the jump-off . Both had already won the 2011 World Cup final and the 2012 and 2013 World Cup competitions in Leipzig. Ahlmann had already announced in the run-up to the tournament that this would be Taloubet Z's last test . In the jump-off they managed their second clear round of the day, the time of 43.19 seconds was two tenths of a second faster than Lopez Lizarazo's. The victory thus went to Ahlmann and Taloubet Z .

11. Exam: Zurich

The eleventh stage marked the end of a tradition: the last time the CSI Zurich was held, the main test of which was held for the first time in 1988 and has been part of the Western European League since 2009. The Zurich World Cup took place from January 26th to 28th, 2018 in the Hallenstadion there. The Swiss riders celebrated another farewell in Zurich, on the occasion of the death of Willi Melliger , they wore black armbands.

In the normal round of the World Cup, 14 riders made no mistakes, those qualified for the jump-off. Mark McAuley prevented a time penalty point from taking the jump-off, Marcus Ehning with Pret A Tout was the fastest of the participants with four penalty points in the normal round .

Four Swiss had made it into the jump-off. The first one, Paul Estermann , was also the first starter in the jump-off and again made no mistakes with Lord Pepsi . The second starter was equally flawless, but significantly faster: The Swedish Stephanie Holmén, who had turned 27 the day before, crossed the finish line in under 39 seconds with Flip's Little Sparrow , a daughter of Malin Baryard-Johnsson's former successful mare Butterfly Flip . Underbidding this time without penalty turned out to be a challenge for the following riders: Hans-Dieter Dreher got stuck with Berlinda in the tight turn after the second stinging obstacle, thus losing the flow in the ride and thus time, but reached the finish without penalty points (place six). Other riders such as Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo or Henrik von Eckermann with his mare Mary Lou , who was highly successful in this indoor season , came close to Holmén's time, but conceded obstacle errors. Of the rides without penalty points, Pius Schwizer came closest to the time of the leaders, but he too was over a second slower with his nine-year-old mare About A Dream . So the victory in the last Mercedes-Benz Classic from Zurich went to Stephanie Holmén.

12th test: Bordeaux

The penultimate station of the Western European Show Jumping League was held from February 2 to 4, 2018 in Bordeaux . This second French World Cup, Jumping International de Bordeaux , took place in the Parc de Expositions de Bordeaux .

In the normal round of the World Cup jumping on Saturday evening, ten riders finished their ride without any mistakes and thus entered the jump-off. The second and third starters in the jump-off, Paul Estermann with Lord Pepsi and Manuel Fernandez Saro with Cannavaro , rode with zero errors. The ride of Pieter Devos had a much faster time: With his gelding Espoir he was able to save time, especially on the long distance from the penultimate to the last obstacle of the jump-off, and crossed the finish line with no mistakes in 36.53.

While Christian Ahlmann and his dark chestnut gelding Tokyo, who were still inexperienced at this level, played no role in the decision of the test, the last three riders were still trying to take the lead. Roger-Yves Bost made an obstacle error with Sydney Une Prince . Marcus Ehning started with the gray stallion Cornado NRW , he managed the second fastest clear round - one and a half seconds slower than Devos. Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo made a mistake with Admara shortly before the end of the jump-off course - despite the second-fastest time of the jump-off, it was only enough for him to finish fifth. Accordingly, the victory went to Pieter Devos.

13th test: Gothenburg

At the end of the season, the Gothenburg Horse Show was on the program. From February 21 to 25, 2018, the riders in Gothenburg had the last chance to collect World Cup points this season.

In normal circulation, eleven zero-error rides were recorded in the Gothenburg World Cup. The jump-off presents the riders and horses with another challenging task, a more than 180-degree turn from an oxer to the remaining two-fold combination towards the end of the jump-off course proved to be particularly challenging. Submit had Evelina TOVEK and her 10-year old gray Castello , but four penalty points received (10th place in the final result). It was followed by the winner of the Gothenburg Trophy the evening before, Robert Whitaker . With Catwalk IV he managed the first clear round in this jump-off, at the same time qualification for the World Cup final was secured for him (previously 29 points). Aldrick Cheronnet with Tanael des Bonnes as the next starter (41.59 seconds) was two hundredths of a second faster and also without mistakes . But that his time was far from a victory time was shown on the next ride: Henrik von Eckermann and 12-year-old Mary Lou crossed the finish line without mistakes in just 36.89 seconds.

This meant that the following starters had to be much more aggressive riding if they wanted to win the test. This was reflected in mistakes, including Edwina Tops-Alexander as the fifth starter in the jump-off. With Inca Boy van't Vianahof the entry point was (four penalty points, ninth place) of the dual combination. Michael Whitaker and Hot Stuff lagged behind Henrik von Eckermann's time, with 37.52 seconds he initially took second place. Nicola Philippaerts did a similar job , with Harley vd Bisschop he was a tenth of a second slower than Michael Whitaker without any mistakes.

Marcus Ehning was already safely qualified for the World Cup final, so he could ride for victory in Gothenburg. With Comme il faut he got better than Tops-Alexander to the entry of the double combination, but at the exit of the combination a pole fell. Despite the fastest time in the jump-off, it was only enough for seventh place. While Philipp Weishaupt had little luck in the jump-off with Convall and gave up and Luciana Diniz had nothing to do with winning the test, Olivier Philippaerts tried to take the lead from Henrik von Eckermann. Olivier Philippaerts had only collected 20 points in this World Europa League season so far, only with a top 3 placement could he still get the right to start the World Cup finals. With Legend of Love he did not come close to the time of the leader, but was a tenth of a second faster than Michael Whitaker without making a mistake and thus came in second.

Overall rating

In the 2017/2018 season there were 13 different winners in the Western European League at 13 stages. With two second places and one victory in only a few World Cup starts, Henrik von Eckermann and Mary Lou were the dominant couple this season.

On the basis of the overall ranking, after all the special tests were completed, it was determined which 18 riders from the states in the Western European League qualify for the final. In addition, other riders from other countries could qualify for the World Cup finals via the Western European League, provided they live in the Central / Western European League.

The riders were also able to collect points in the North American World Cup (see “others” in the table below). Rating points from other World Cup leagues in the world, however, were not transferred to the Western European League.

The regulations can be found in the main article on the Show Jumping World Cup .
