Stomatepia pindu is a species of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae) that isendemicin the Cameroonian crater lake Barombi Mbo .
features
Stomatepia pindu can reach a length of 12 cm, has the elongated body typical of Stomatepia species , but is the tallest species of the genus. The body height is 30 to 37% of the standard length . The mouth is large, the length of the upper jaw is about a third of the length of the head, as is the length of the muzzle (in the case of fish, the area from the front edge of the eye to the tip of the mouth). In both jaws the teeth in the outer row are two-pointed with two tips of different sizes. The smaller tip can also be reduced to a hump or be absent. The teeth of the inner rows are three-pointed. The lower pharyngealia is slightly longer than it is wide. Their teeth are small and bumpy. 15 to 20 small, conical gill rakes are located on the lower branch of the first gill arch . The sensory system on the head is more developed than usual.
Most of the specimens are completely black in color, including the fins. Sometimes the complete blackening is limited to the back and turns into a pattern of irregular black spots on the lower sides of the body and on the fins. The gill covers often shimmer purple, the eyes are often slightly reddish. Stressed fish are gray with a row of black or dark gray spots along the midline of the sides of the body and a second row of black spots above. Young fish have a tilapia spot on their dorsal fin that disappears with age.
- Fin formula : Dorsal XIII – XV / 10–11, Anale III / 8–9.
