She studied at the University of Reading from 1917 to 1921 and published her first scientific publication on sea urchins in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association shortly after completing her studies . After completing her studies, she initially worked as a science teacher for the next four years. In 1925 she got a position at King's College London , from then on she was able to devote herself to research and research on various anatomical features of frogs and toads . At King's College she met the ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan , who became her mentor and made her his assistant until she moved to the British Museum of Natural History in 1935 , where she later became assistant curator of zoology.

Regan also piqued her interest in the African cichlids, especially the tilapiini and the mbuna of Lake Malawi . In 1935 Trewavas published a standard work on the cichlids of Lake Malawi, in 1982 another on the tilapiini. In 1939 she traveled to Lake Malawi to catch fish and to research them. Later she undertook research and collecting trips to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, the crater lakes of Cameroon and described numerous new species. In addition to cichlids, Ethelwynn Trewavas dealt and researched the Umberfishes (Sciaenidae) in particular . In 1961 she retired from professional life.

For her research, she became an honorary member of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in 1946 . In 1968 she was honored with the Linné Medal of the Linnean Society of London and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stirling in 1986 .
