Labeotropheus ( Latin : "labea" = lip + tropheus ) is a genus of African cichlids (Cichlidae). All Labeotropheus species live endemically in Lake Malawi in East Africa and belong to thembuna that are boundto the biotope of the rocky coasts . Characteristic for the genus is the lower mouth with a thick, fleshy upper lip. The fish are nursery eaters. In addition to their main food, algae, they also consume small crustaceans , worms and insect larvae .

Labeotropheus have a very strong sexual dimorphism , i. H. Males and females look different. The males are polygamous. The females take up to 40 eggs in their mouths (mouth brooders ).
