Ben Kynard

Ben D. Kynard (* 28. February 1920 in Eureka Springs , Arkansas , † 5 July 2012 in Kansas City ) was an American jazz - saxophonist ( alto and baritone saxophone ), composer and arranger , who through his work with Lionel Hampton became known.

Kynard learned to play the saxophone from his brother and graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City in 1938. Already in his youth he performed in night clubs. After completing his military service in the US Army, he played in the orchestra of Lionel Hampton from 1946 to 1953, for whom he arranged and in 1946 composed the title Red Top . For the song that Hampton recorded for Decca in 1947 and which was soon successfully covered by Gene Ammons , Kynard got too few royalties. Red Top was later also used by musicians such as Daevid Allen , Anthony Braxton , Dexter Gordon , Louis Jordan , Erroll Garner ,Slide Hampton , Woody Herman and His Orchestra , King Pleasure / Betty Carter and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson recorded. After Kynard left the Hampton band, he worked 32 years for the United States Postal Service in Kansas City; he also played jazz in nightclubs and wrote compositions for local musicians. Kynard participated in 51 recording sessions from 1945 to 1984, including a. with Willis Jackson , Sonny Parker , Joe Thomas and in 1948 for Billie Holiday ( I Cover the Waterfront ).

Ben Kynard was an uncle of the organist Charles Kynard .
