The indigenous people of the region knew about the healing properties of various springs in the area of ​​today's city of Eureka Springs.

Finds of ancient objects in a cave show that Spanish conquistadors were the first Europeans in the region.

The doctor Alvah Jackson, one of the region's early pioneers, is listed in later documents in 1856 as the "discoverer" of the mineral springs. In a cave, Jackson set up a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War .

The judge JB Sounders made the sources known nationwide from 1879 after he had been healed himself. On July 4, 1879, a large number of people pitched their camp at the site and founded the settlement of Eureka Springs, which was promoted to town a year later.

In 1882, Eureka Springs got a connection to the railway network, which made the number of guests continue to increase. As a result, a number of larger hotels were built, such as the Crescent Hotel in 1886 and the Basin Park Hotel in 1905 .
