The Olympia London International Horse Show (officially: Olympia - The London International Horse Show ) is a horse show in London , England , considered to be one of the largest tournaments in the United Kingdom. It is advertised as CSI 5 * -W and CDI -W and is held on the last weekend before Christmas. The venue is the Olympia Grand Hall .

history

In 2007 the tournament celebrated its 100th anniversary, making it one of the oldest tournaments still held in equestrian sport.

At the beginning the tournament was called the Royal International Horse Show , which today only refers to the British Nations Cup in show jumping , which was initially held in the Olympia. The Nations Cup tournament later changed location and will now be held in Hickstead . The tournament in the Olympia Hall remained under a different name.

The tournament made history as early as 1909. As part of the tournament, the first Nations Cup in the history of the jumping discipline, which was still young at the time, was held.

Once again, the tournament was in December 2009 in history: As part of the Grand Prix Freestyle erritten Edward Gal and Totilas a score of 92.300%, which set a new world record in the Grand Prix Freestyle on.

procedure

The Olympia Horse Show is of its kind as a special tournament: Referring to the tradition of the tournament, everyone involved in the tournament (with the exception of the riders) is obliged to wear a suit. The structure of the tournament is also unusual in comparison to other large equestrian events: From Thursday to Monday, the program consists of two sections per day. The center of each section is a show program that repeats itself over the entire tournament, around which jumping competitions are grouped. The sections also include tests such as dogagility and Shetland pony races . Despite this structure, the tournament always enjoys a high number of visitors. A new record was set in 2013, when 95,276 visitors came to the tournament.

Many jumping competitions have special names adapted to the Christmas atmosphere, for example "The Santa Stakes" or "The Christmas Pudding Stakes". The rides of the jumping competitions were commented on by the English show jumping legend Geoff Billington , among others , in a funny way.

As part of the tournament, a world cup competition and a dressage world cup test will be held.

dressage

The first two days of the tournament (Monday and Tuesday) only consist of an evening program. On Monday only the Grand Prix de Dressage will be held. The Grand Prix is the qualification test for the Grand Prix Freestyle, which is the valuation test of the Dressage World Cup. This takes place on Tuesday evening. In 2014, the freestyle was endowed with € 40,000. The show program will also be shown for the first time on this evening.

Records have been set in the Grand Prix competitions several times at the Olympia London International Horse Show . After Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro's world record ride in December 2014, the chief judge of the exam, Stephen Clark, said: “ Charlotte's ride was just out of this world. In 2009 I really thought we'd never see anything like this again. I don't know what this tournament does to the horses that they go so extraordinary here. But they are amazing here. "
