Edward Gal (born March 4, 1970 in Rheden ) is a Dutch dressage rider.

Gal led the FEI world rankings with Totilas in June 2011 , several months after the sale of Totilas. In October 2013 he was fourth in the world rankings with Undercover , with three other horses he was also in this rankings.

Career

Edward Gal was the son of a car dealer in Rheden in Dutch born Gelderland. His family said he had never had anything to do with horses, but he still wanted to ride, which he did at the age of fourteen. At the age of 17 he got his first pony and from then on concentrated on dressage riding.

After graduating from school, he began to study economics , but gave up after a year in favor of riding. In the mid-1990s he achieved fourth place with cappuccino in the “PAVO Cup”, the Dutch championship for young dressage horses. He also won the Dutch championships with cappuccino (medium grade ). In 1999 and 2001 he won four silver medals at the various levels of the Dutch championships. In 1999 he also took his first international exam in Nunspeet, the Netherlands . In 2002 he won the championship title in the easy tour of the Dutch championships with Lingh .

The breakthrough in Gal's career came in 2003. He won several tests with Lingh and was subsequently included in the Dutch championship squad. This year he was part of a Dutch team at an international championship for the first time and reached 4th place with the Dutch team at the European Championships in Hickstead. In the individual ranking he reached 29th place with Lingh . In the following winter he reached the second place with Lingh at the World Cup finals in Düsseldorf 2004. That year he was the first Dutch champion of the seniors (with Lingh ).

In the summer of 2004 he was scheduled for the Dutch Olympic team, but Lingh was injured shortly before. At the World Cup finals in Las Vegas in early 2005, he was able to defend second place with Lingh . At the European Championships in 2005 in Hagen , he was second with Lingh in the team classification as part of the Dutch team, and fourth in the individual classification.

In November 2006 Lingh (previously owned by a Dutch industrialist) was sold to an American dressage rider. As a result, he concentrated next to his horse Gribaldi on his young horses and presented Next One and Sisther de Jeu at Grand Prix level.

In the summer of 2009 he beat Anky van Grunsven , who together with Isabell Werth largely dominated the international dressage competitions until 2008, at the Dutch championships. With the then nine-year-old stallion Totilas , who was described as the new “wonder horse”, he won this with an average of 81.394%. At the European Championships in 2009, Gal and Totilas won the gold medal with the team and the silver medal in the Grand Prix Spécial. In the Grand Prix Freestyle they also achieved the gold medal, with a result of 84.085% in the Grand Prix de Dressage and a result of 90.750% in the Grand Prix Freestyle , they set two world records.

On December 16, 2009, Gal topped his own world record with Totilas when he won the World Cup Freestyle in London-Olympia Hall with 92.300%. In addition, at the end of March 2010 he won the World Cup final for dressage riders and in May 2010 the rider classification of the World Dressage Masters 2009/10. Gal also defended the Dutch championship title in 2010 with Totilas . Gal and Totilas set a third world record at the CHIO Aachen . Here they won the Grand Prix Spécial des CDIO 5 * with 86.458%

At the 2010 World Equestrian Games , Edward Gal and Totilas won gold with the Netherlands in the team competition and gold in the individual competition in the Grand Prix Spécial and in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Also another medalist dressage competitions at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 comes from the stable of Edward Gal: Ravel, the horse who was born in Wesel and emigrated to the US rider Steffen Peters was before it bought Peters sponsors of Edward Gal to St. George presented and prepared for his first appearances at Grand Prix level.

After the World Equestrian Games in 2010, Totilas was sold by Gal's sponsors. At the 2011 World Cup finals , he finished fourth with Sisther de Jeu . With the same horse he finished second at the 2011 Dutch Championships. In June 2012 Gal became Dutch dressage champion with his new horse Undercover , in March 2013 he became Dutch indoor champion in the difficult tour with Next One . A month later he finished third with Undercover at the World Cup finals in Gothenburg. He repeated this result at the 2014 World Cup final with Undercover .
