The World Dressage Masters - WDM for short - was an international dressage tournament series that had been held since 2009 . All tournaments in the series were advertised as CDI 4 * or 5 *. The main sponsors of the series were the VIAN Group as well as Jerich International and Nürnberger Versicherung . In 2017 the organizers went bankrupt.

Development and stages of the tournament series

In mid-June 2008, as part of the international show jumping and dressage tournament in Cannes (CSI 5 * / CDI 5 *), it was announced that a new series of dressage sports would be created from 2009. The following tournaments were planned for 2009, all of which were advertised as CDI 5 *: Wellington (Florida) , Salzburg , Munich-Riem and Hickstead . The tournament in Salzburg was replaced by the tournament in Cannes as a stage of the World Dressage Masters due to construction work on the Salzburg Residenzplatz (planned venue) and due to financial problems. At the 2009/10 finals in Munich-Riem it was announced that Falsterbo will also be part of the World Dressage Masters from 2010.

In 2011 the US event changed location within Palm Beach County and the stage in Cannes in mid-June at the "Cannes Jumping International" was canceled. The distribution of the prize money was also changed in 2011 in favor of the Grand Prix Freestyle. The dressage tournament in Hickstead was canceled in 2012, with Mechelen an indoor tournament was added to the series as a valuation tournament for the first time. The tournament in Hickstead will take place again in 2013, but is no longer part of the World Dressage Masters, but of the new dressage Nations Cup series . At the beginning of 2014, there was no WDM tournament in Palm Beach County, instead Vidauban in southern France was added.

In 2015 there were again significant changes for the tournament series: After the contract with the previous main sponsor Axel Johnson Group had expired, the Ukrainian VIAN Group took over the main sponsorship of the World Dressage Masters. With the loss of the Swedish main sponsor of the WDM, the Falsterbo Horse Show will no longer host a stage of the World Dressage Masters from 2015, but a Nations Cup . Two more stages were added to the indoor season, which will be held in Lier, Belgium and once in Roosendaal , the Netherlands . In addition, two promotional tournaments (WDM promotional show) were organized in the Baltic States, but they are carried out outside the tournament series.

The year 2016 brought another significant change in the tournament calendar: the German stage was moved from Munich to the Wiesbaden Whitsun tournament, which will take place a week later , and a new stage will be held at the CHI Geneva . Bernadette Brune also refrained from holding further tournaments at her riding facility in Vidauban, also in view of an upcoming complete move to Germany. With the exception of the stage in Mechelen, all WDM valuation tournaments are only advertised as CDI 4 *.

This resulted in the following tournament calendar for the World Dressage Masters in 2016:

Top sport, media coverage and the internationalization of dressage were the goals of the tournament series. Each stage of the World Dressage Masters was endowed with € 50,000 (previously € 100,000). The program included the following exams:

The participants who had successfully completed the Grand Prix could decide whether they wanted to take part in the Grand Prix Spécial or the Grand Prix Freestyle. The number of participants in the Grand Prix Freestyle was limited to six or eight participants, the first placed participants in the Grand Prix will be given preference in the selection.

Bernadette Brune sued the organizers after they did not pay any prize money at the CDI 5 * Vidauban 2015. The VIAN Group has also raised allegations of fraud after the sponsorship money paid by the VIAN Group for the CDI 5 * Mechelen 2016 was not passed on to the tournament organizer by the WDM organizers. There were no more WDM stages in 2017. The WDM organizers were declared bankrupt in October 2017.

Overall rating

A year after the tournament series was announced, a new partnership was announced in Cannes: Nürnberger Versicherung became one of the main sponsors of the World Dressage Masters, and an overall ranking for the World Dressage Masters was started at the same time. Cannes was the first stop, Munich was the final of the World Dressage Masters.

The overall ranking, endowed with € 25,000, was calculated based on the world ranking list points awarded during the World Dressage Masters tournaments. The world ranking points awarded in the Grand Prix, Grand Prix Spécial and Grand Prix Freestyle were multiplied by a factor of 1.5 and were included in the overall ranking. In the case of Finale, a factor of 2.0 was used.

An overall rating was published for the last time in 2014.
