Ulla Salzgeber
Ulla Salzgeber (* 5. August 1958 in Oberhausen as U. Helbing ) is a German dressage rider . So far in her career she has been twice Olympic champion and twice world champion.
Career
Ulla Salzgeber grew up in an equestrian family. She started vaulting at the age of ten . Her later trainer Fritz Tempelmann introduced her to dressage riding. At the age of 19 she became team European champion in 1977 and took fourth place in the individual ranking in the junior age group.
After completing her law degree and marrying Sebastian Salzgeber, she moved to Bad Wörishofen . There she and her husband set up a training center for dressage riders.
In 1997, Salzgeber was appointed to the German equestrian team for the European Dressage Championships in Verden (Aller) . She immediately became team European champion and took 6th place in the individual ranking with her horse Rusty .
At the World Equestrian Games in Rome in 1998 , she was world dressage champion with the German team. In the individual competition she won the bronze medal behind her teammate Isabell Werth and the Dutch Anky van Grunsven . She repeated these placements in 2002 at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera .
At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Salzgeber became Olympic champion with the German dressage team. In the individual competition she came third behind van Grunsven and Werth. She had to prove her strong nerves when the music stopped during her freestyle and she was only able to continue her ride after an interruption. After Isabell Werth's gigolo resigned , Salzgeber became the strongest German dressage rider. In 2001 and 2002 she won the dressage world cup with Rusty .
For the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Salzgeber was initially considered the top favorite. After her horse Rusty had tested positive for testosterone at the 2003 World Cup finals in Gothenburg , she had to give up her title as World Cup winner and received a fine. The German Equestrian Association banned her for two months in February 2004. With a special permit, Salzgeber took part in the German Championships in 2004 and qualified for the Olympic Games. According to Salzgeber, the veterinarian Hans Stihl had treated the horse with testosterone propionate because of a skin irritation without her knowledge.
In the Olympic competition on August 21, 2004, Salzgeber secured her sixth consecutive Olympic victory in the dressage team competition as the final rider with an almost flawless ride by the German team. In the individual competition, she won the silver medal. With this ride, Salzgeber withdrew from top-class sport and said goodbye to her horse Rusty into retirement.
For this she was awarded the silver bay leaf on March 16, 2005.
After several years of absence in international dressage, Ulla Salzgeber returned in 2008. In 2009 she was third in the special and in the freestyle at the German championship in Balve with Herzruf's Erbe . In the following year she decided not to take part in the CHIO Aachen and the German Championships 2010. This meant that she was not eligible for the German team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games . At the World Cup finals in early 2011 , she took third place with Herzruf's Erbe .
In the same year, she decided not to take part in the German championships and thus possibly to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games .
“Due to my frequent absence as an international trainer, I cannot currently have the full performance potential of Herzruf's legacy. At the Olympic Games, every athlete has to achieve top performances. Even if we were to recommend ourselves for the team, the risk would be too high for me that my horse in London could not contribute to a top result for the team to the desired extent. Therefore my personal goals have to take second place to the interests of the German dressage sport. "
In March 2011 she left Bad Wörishofen and moved to nearby Blonhofen . From July 2016 she rode in the Ettringen equestrian center .
After Salzgeber had already not participated in the German Championships in 2011, she announced at the end of June 2011 that she would not be participating in the CHIO Aachen and the European Championships. She currently wants to concentrate on her coaching work. She left it open whether she would be able to participate in later championships. At the CHI Donaueschingen at the end of September 2011, she returned to the tournament sport with Herzruf's Erbe .
As a result, Herzruf's legacy showed itself to be vulnerable to injury, so from late summer 2012 he was given a one-year break from grazing and was not used in sports. This meant that Salzgeber was initially without a horse for international tournament sports. In autumn 2012 she trained several horses in the Saarland town of Perl that had previously been ridden by Patrik Kittel . However, Salzgeber stopped this after a few weeks, as working at two distant locations was associated with excessive stress, which severely restricted her trainer activity.
In the summer of 2015, Salzgeber passed Herzruf's legacy into retirement. At the same time she contested her first international tests with the dark chestnut Sir Simon , followed by her first appearances at Grand Prix level in 2016. Salzgeber played her last international tournament in Mannheim in May 2017, and at the end of the year she retired from international sport as an active rider. In the summer of 2018 Ulla Salzgeber moved into her own riding facility in Königsbrunn .
