CHI Donaueschingen
CHI Donaueschingen , also known as SD Fürst Joachim zu Fürstenberg memorial tournament, is an international horse show that is one of the most traditional tournaments in Europe .
CHI is an international horse show with more than one discipline. The tournament is mostly advertised as CAI-A ( four-in-hand driving ) and CSI 3 * (show jumping). Since 2008 the tournament has also been advertised as CDI 4 * (dressage). In addition, the tournament was supplemented by an international amateur show jumping tour in 2006 and the tests of the European Youngster Cup have been advertised as CSIU25-A since 2009 . From 2008 to 2012 special, internationally advertised dressage tests for riders up to 25 years of age (CDIU25-A) were carried out.
Top international athletes compete in Donaueschingen every year. The tournament is a highlight for the region's young riders thanks to the Young Masters League (European Youngster Cup, a Europe-wide tournament series for show jumpers up to 25 years of age). The tournament is organized by the Reit- und Fahrverein Schwenningen eV in cooperation with the equestrian marketing company ESCON-Marketing.
Tournament history
Highlights in the history of the tournament were the hosting of the European championships for four-in-hand drivers in 1977, the hosting of the CHIO of the Federal Republic of Germany in place of Aachen in 1986 (which held the last world championships for show jumpers that year before the creation of the world equestrian games) and the organization of the European championships for dressage riders in 1991 and the show jumper in 2003. Other highlights were the finals for the Nations Prize Trophy in 1998 and 2002. Other highlights were the finals for the Nations Prize Trophy in 1998 and 2002.
The beginnings of the CHI Donaueschingen can be found in 1954, when a national tournament was held for the first time. From 1959 riders from neighboring countries also took part. In 1964, the Baden-Württemberg Championships in dressage and show jumping were held here. One year later the international tournament history of the tournament began with the first staging as CHI Donaueschingen. As early as 1976 the tournament held another major championship: the German female show jumping championship and the German professional dressage championship. 1981 and 1985 were the first two Bundeschampionate held here. The four-in-hand drivers, who have been represented at the CHI since 1976, also hosted the German four-in-hand championships in 2000.
In 1986 the Federal German CHIO was held as part of the CHI Donaueschingen , which is usually carried out as part of the CHIO Aachen . In that year, however, Aachen was the venue for the World Show Jumping Championships (the last of its kind before the World Equestrian Games were introduced) and the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein, as the host of the CHIO, decided not to host the 1986 tournament. Therefore Donaueschingen was chosen as a substitute organizer. At the time, this meant that the tournament was extended by a few days (starting on Tuesdays instead of Thursdays at the CHI); As usual in Aachen, the Nations' Prize was held on Fridays .
In the past, the tournament also hosted several championships and Nations Cup tournaments in the lower age groups of show jumpers.
exams
Show jumping
The international jumping competitions at the CHI Donaueschingen were endowed with a total of more than 170,000 € in 2017, of which the Grand Prize accounted for 57,000 € (including a car for the winner).
The jumping competitions are divided into:
- a medium tour and a large tour with a total of seven tests including the Grand Prix
- a tour for young show jumpers with three tests
- three tests in the U-25 Tour (European Youngster Cup)
- ten tests of the ESCON Spring Club (amateur tests, CSIAm-A and CSIAm-B), these are again divided into tests in the small, medium and large amateur tour.
There are also other national tests.
Dressage riding
From 2003 to 2006 the dressage tests were missing in the program of the CHI Donaueschingen, after this break the tournament was initially announced in 2007 as CDI-Y for riders between 20 and 25 years of age and nationally in the other tests. In 2008, the great dressage sport returned to Donaueschingen, since then the program has been as follows:
- two tests of the CDI 4 *: Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial
- other dressage tests that are announced nationally, for example a qualification for the final of the Nuremberg Burg Cup .
Team driving
The CHI program is completed by the team drivers who hold international tests for four-in-hand and pony four-in-hand drivers. In 2017, these ten exams were endowed with a total of € 34,000. Since the world championship for four-in-hand drivers took place in Riesenbeck in 2012, the German driving derby was held in Donaueschingen. While it was based in Riesenbeck for the next two years, the derby has been held annually in Donaueschingen since 2015. The European four-in-hand driver championships were held in 2019 as part of the CHI Donaueschingen.

European four in hand driving championships 2019
In November 2016, CHI Donaueschingen was awarded the contract to host the 2019 European four-in-hand driving championships. The 2019 European Championships replaced the four-in-hand driver competitions held as part of the CHI.
After the driving training, Benjamin Aillaud from France was in the lead, followed by the teams of IJsbrand Chardon and his son Bram Chardon in second and third. As expected, the Netherlands led by almost 10 points.
The day of the off-road trip was unhappy for the Netherlands: IJsbrand Chardon's carriage overturned at the obstacle complex four, which led to the exclusion. His teammate Koos de Ronde caused a scandal: De Ronde did not receive the information that the time for phase A had been adjusted. He appealed against the time errors resulting from his time being too slow. After this was not recognized, he left Donaueschingen, so that on the last day of the tournament there was no longer a Dutch team. The strong German team produced positive headlines: All three teams of the team came under the first six places, Germany was on the gold course before the obstacle course.
When driving an obstacle, a fallen cone caused Georg von Stein to drop from bronze to fourth place. His teammates were able to maintain positions five and six. This was the first time that Germany won the gold medal at a European four-in-hand championship. In the individual standings, a fallen cone could not prevent Bram Chardon from winning. His lead over Benjamin Aillaud was sufficiently comfortable after off-road driving that he succeeded his father IJsbrand Chardon as European champion. In addition to the three team drivers, Germany was also at the start with six other teams: veteran Christoph Sandmann finished seventh, Mareike Harm tenth. Jérôme Voutaz was the only Swiss participant in 13th place, while the Austrian drivers took the back positions.
