The Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is a tournament series founded in 1992 for dressage riders .

General

The Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is a tournament series for 7- to 9-year-old dressage horses. In the field of promoting young talent, it is considered the most important series of its kind worldwide. In the "green season" qualification tests take place across Germany. In 2014, an examination outside of Germany was held for the first time at Achleiten Castle in Austria. The last qualification has been held in the Frankenhalle in Nuremberg since 2011 as part of the fascination of horses and is also considered a sporting dress rehearsal for the final.

Only the winners of these eliminations are qualified for the finals held at the International Festhalle Riding Tournament in Frankfurt am Main, which traditionally takes place in mid-December. If couples who are eligible to start do not take part, there is the possibility of moving up. The main sponsor and namesake is Nürnberger Versicherung .

The Nuremberg Castle Cup was first held in 1992. The initiator of the competition is Hans-Peter Schmidt, then Chairman of the Board of Management and now Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Nürnberger Versicherung as well as President of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association and member of the executive board of the German Equestrian Association (FN). A special test, the “Prix St. Georg Special”, was developed for this competition. This is shorter and more demanding than the Prix St. Georges . The developer of this test and the patron from the beginning was the six-time Olympic champion Dr. Reiner Klimke , most successful dressage rider of all time. The appeal of this competition grew over the years, and in 2005 the “Prix St. Georges Special” was included as an S5 in the list of tasks of the German Equestrian Association (FN). Also on the initiative of Hans-Peter Schmidt, a special prize for seating and influence (style prize) and an honorary prize for pointing backwards will be awarded at the final of the Nuremberg Burg Pokal in Frankfurt , which has also been included in the evaluation with double the number of points since the beginning of 2012. The importance of turning backwards is intended to underline the importance of this lesson in terms of permeability and trust.

Numerous horses that were successful in this competition later celebrated great success on an international level: The 1997 winning horse, Chacomo , became the first Olympic champion from this series with Alexandra Simons-de Ridder in Sydney in 2000 . At the Olympic Games in London 2012 , only horses were nominated for the German team that had taken part in the Nuremberg Burg Pokal and qualified for the final. These were Dablino (qualified for the 2008 final), Damon Hill NRW (2008 final), Desperados (2009 final) and Diva Royal (2009 final). At the European Championships in 2013 in Denmark and the World Equestrian Games in 2014, Germany also competed exclusively with successful four-legged friends from the Nuremberg Burg Pokal, winning team gold in each case.

The tournament series represents the transition from the Bundeschampionat to the Grand Prix sport in the training of the horses . Participating horses may not yet have a placement at Grand Prix level in order to guarantee a species-appropriate and gentle training.

In order to introduce younger riders to tournament sport, the Nuremberg Burg Cup for Juniors was brought into being in 1995. It is carried out in cooperation with several regional associations and is based on the regional performance level. There are currently examinations of this type in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin-Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Northern Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Thuringia and Westphalia. The event series are also structured into qualifications and final exams. Some of these are held at renowned and internationally significant tournaments such as the CHI Donaueschingen , the Fascination Horse in Nuremberg and the Festhallen horse show in Frankfurt.

Every qualification and every final of the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, which is held within all these series, also organizes a lead reins class for the very young riders between the ages of four and ten years.
