Steve Guerdat (born June 10, 1982 in Bassecourt ) is an internationally successful Swiss show jumper .

He was Olympic champion in London in 2012 . In November 2012, Guerdat led the world rankings for the first time, and again he held this rank throughout 2019.

Private

Steve Guerdat is the youngest son of former show jumper and two-time Olympian Philippe Guerdat . He dropped out of school while he was still in eleventh grade for riding.

Guerdat has been training Finn Jenni Dahlman since 2007 . After Dahlman and her husband Kimi Räikkönen separated, Swiss tabloid media reported in February 2013 about a relationship between Dahlman and Guerdat. However, this was denied by Guerdat's management.

Since 2018 he has been in a relationship with the French U25 young rider and model Fanny Skalli. The couple got engaged in July 2019.

Career

The daily contact with horses resulting from his father's profession gave rise to his interest in riding. He received his first riding lessons in early childhood.

His father also initiated the first equestrian station outside of his own stable, initially a one-month stay with Beat Mändli . As a result, he was promoted by his father and Mändli equestrian with a view to a tournament career. Between 1997 and 2002 he took part in two junior and three young rider European championships and won two bronze medals with the team.

In 2003 he moved to Jan Tops' trading stable in the Netherlands, where he succeeded Rolf-Göran Bengtsson as rider. During this time he celebrated his first major successes in the rider age group, so he was sixth in the individual ranking at the 2003 European Championships with Tepic and won bronze with the team. The first Olympic participation followed a year later . Also due to the fact that he had to regularly return his horses to the Tops stable due to sales, he left the stable after three and a half years and moved to Belgium.

From then on, Steve Guerdat rode for three months for the oil billionaire Oleksandr Onishchenko . Guerdat's father was the national trainer of the Ukrainian show jumpers at the time. When Guerdat, despite a seven-figure sum promised to him, refused to take up Ukrainian citizenship in order to ride for Onischenko's “bought-together” Ukrainian national team, they parted ways.

"I'm swiss. Point."

Steve Guerdat therefore had no horses available for a few months and was only a spectator at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen . Yves G. Piaget, offspring of the Piaget watch manufacturer and a friend of the family, bought him new horses. With the mare Jalisca Solier , he became the first Swiss to win the World Cup in Geneva shortly afterwards .

“On the horse, that's where I feel most alive. I love horses, without them my life is pointless. "

- Geneva 2006

“It was love at first sight. When I sat on her back for the first time, I knew straight away: this is the horse of my life. We understand each other blindly. The other reacts to the slightest movement of one. We form a harmonious couple, although she is not easy to ride as a distinct fighter. She has an extraordinary character and a strong will. I wouldn't give them away for any money in the world. "

- Steve Guerdat on Jalisca Solier

Through the mediation of the President of the Swiss Equestrian Federation, Urs Oberholzer, a contact was established with the financier and polo player Urs Schwarzenbach . He made his facility, the Rütihof in Herrliberg , available to Guerdat . Steve Guerdat started his own business here in April 2007.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Hong Kong he won the bronze medal in team jumping on Jalisca Solier together with Christina Liebherr , Pius Schwizer and Niklaus Schurtenberger . Shortly afterwards he became Swiss champion.

In December 2008, Guerdat had his back operated on, which is why he paused for a while. In 2009 he won the team gold medal at the European Championships in Windsor.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Guerdat won the gold medal for Switzerland in the individual jumping with Nino des Buissonnets - as the only rider with two zero-error rides. This made him the first Swiss individual jumping champion since 1924, when Alphonse Gemuseus also won gold in the individual competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics . The team reached fourth place with 16 fault points.

In early February 2013, Guerdat was kicked in the knee by a horse and injured in the shin during a tournament in Bordeaux . Since he decided not to take a break from the tournament in favor of qualifying for the World Cup, the injury caused renewed back problems.

In December 2013, Jalisca Solier was retired from sport as part of the CHI Geneva . This also ended the longstanding partnership between Steve Guerdat and patron Yves G. Piaget.

After Steve Guerdat 2012 Rich Fellers and 2013 Beezie Madden only lost in a playoff for the victory in the World Cup final, he won the title in 2015 with the mare Paille . A year later he defended his title with Corbinian at the 2016 World Cup final in Gothenburg .

In January 2016, Guerdat caused displeasure in Switzerland when he gave up the 5 * tournament in Basel in favor of a ski holiday, although he says he prefers to spend his time in competitions rather than on vacation. The tournament justified the decision not to start with the fact that Guerdat wanted to spare his horses for the Olympic year, but other media reported that Guerdat was dissatisfied with the Basel Grand Prix mode (two rounds and jump-off), as well as the commitment of Frank Rothenberger as a new course -Chef was and therefore canceled. As early as 2013, Guerdat had publicly criticized the course in Basel as "too strenuous and too angular", whereupon the Swiss course designer Rolf Lüdi withdrew from all Swiss 5 * tournaments.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Switzerland came sixth, while Guerdat was the first to deal with the Nations Cup with eight penalty points. In the individual standings, however, Steve Guerdat was able to build on the performance in London 2012 with Nino des Buissonnets : In both rounds of the individual final he made no mistakes and made it into the jump-off. Here an obstacle error and a slower time than bronze medalist Eric Lamaze prevented a podium position, Guerdat came in fourth. As a result, he announced that this was the last championship for Nino des Buissonnets .

In December 2016, Guerdat used the CHI Geneva again as a stage for a farewell, his successful gelding Nino des Buissonnets ended his career here. At the beginning of February 2017, Steve Guerdat left the Rütihof, he took over the riding facility in Elgg from Monika and Paul Weier .

Steve Guerdat is one of the minority of top international riders who do not focus on the stations of the Global Champions Tour when planning their season and are not part of the Global Champions League team. In the 2017 Nations Cup series , he achieved fault-free laps in both laps in three of his six participations. In 2017 and 2018 Steve Guerdat was the rider with the most faultless rides in Nations Cups. At the 2017 European Championships in Gothenburg, Switzerland won team bronze with him, and at the 2018 World Equestrian Games , Guerdat won the individual bronze medal with Bianca .

Lock

On July 21, 2015, Guerdat was temporarily banned from the International Equestrian Federation for two months after both Nino des Buissonnets and Nasa tested positive for the banned substances codeine and morphine during the tournament in La Baule . The Secretary General of the FEI pointed out that all samples contained oripavin , which is not found in any veterinary medicinal product. Positive results regularly come from digestion of opium poppy seeds , which also contain codeine and morphine. It therefore stands to reason that it is contamination. However, the standard procedure must be followed.

While the suspension against Guerdat was lifted after a week and a telephone hearing before the FEI tribunal, the two horses concerned will remain suspended until September 19, 2015. As a result, Guerdat was not nominated for the European Championship in Aachen by the Swiss Association .

In cooperation with the FEI and the long-standing feed supplier, the cause of the contamination could be determined. The opium poppy seeds were in uncrushed oat kernels that were added to compound feed. On September 18, 2015, the FEI signed final declarations in which the two riders concerned were acquitted of any guilt of intent or negligence.

On November 29, 2015, Steve Guerdat spoke personally about the development of this case for the first time at a press conference. He emphasized how important it was to him to find out the exact causes of the contamination instead of just speculating about the contamination. According to the agreement with the FEI, he has to bear all costs of the laboratory analyzes himself. He also regrets that the FEI is holding on to withdrawing his victory in the La Baule Grand Prix because it was very emotional for him. When asked whether he was considering legal action against the feed manufacturer, Guerdat replied that this day was about freeing his name from doping allegations and that demands for redress were considerations for the future.
