Urs Schwarzenbach

Urs Ernst Schwarzenbach (born September 17, 1948 in Thalwil ) is a Swiss financier, art collector and hotel owner.

Life

As the son of a print shop owner, he grew up in a simple family. In 1968 he started working for the Swiss Bank Corporation and went to London four years later. In 1976 he started his own foreign exchange trading company .

Schwarzenbach's fortune is estimated at 1.5 to 2 billion euros. He owns real estate worth € 300 million in England alone. He also owns real estate in Switzerland, Scotland, Australia and Morocco. Since 2001 he has owned the majority of shares in the Zurich luxury hotel The Dolder Grand . In 2007 he bought an entire English village with 44 houses for around 90 million francs. Shortly before, he had already bought the country estate of Culham Court for 50 million francs .

Schwarzenbach is the sponsor of the show jumper Steve Guerdat and provides him with his Rütihof riding stable in Herrliberg . He also has his own polo team, the Black Bears, and is President of St. Moritz Polo AG.

The Swiss tax authorities started investigating Schwarzenbach in September 2012 for tax evasion, and searches were carried out in April 2014. The Federal Administrative Court ruled on February 1, 2019 that Schwarzenbach had to pay several million francs in VAT, plus default interest and procedural costs. Schwarzenbach announced that he would go to federal court. A foreclosure sale of his art collection, the largest in the history of Swiss customs with 114 works of art, was stopped by a court in early December 2019.

Schwarzenbach is married and has a son and a daughter. He lives in Küsnacht , previously in England.
