Christina Liebherr (born March 16, 1979 in Stuttgart , Baden-Württemberg ) is a Swiss show jumper .

She is the granddaughter of Hans Liebherr , the founder of the construction machine group Liebherr . Christina Liebherr lives in Riaz in the canton of Friborg (Switzerland) and is a trained tourism specialist. Born in Germany, she has had Swiss citizenship since 1994.

Career

Liebherr learned to ride at the age of nine. Even in her youth she was considered a great talent. She won a total of three bronze medals at the European Junior Championships in 1996 and 1997. In 1998 she became the U21 European champion with the team. In the elite category she made her breakthrough to the top of the world on LB No Mercy in 2004 when the Swiss team won the CSIO Nations Cup in Zagreb. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens she reached the 14th place in the individual and fifth place with the team.

In 2005 Liebherr came second in the CSIO National Prize in St. Gallen . In the same year she won the silver medal in the individual and team competition at the European Championships in San Patrignano . When she was voted Sportsman of the Year 2005, she was nominated as “Newcomer of the Year” alongside Jonas Hiller and Daniel Hubmann . At the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen , she finished 11th (individual) and 5th (team). In 2007 she came second at the CSIO St. Gallen, and in 2008 she won this show jumping competition. At the Olympic Games in Hong Kong in 2008 , she first came fourth in the team standings. Since a rider from the third-placed Norwegian team was disqualified for doping, the Swiss show jumpers were awarded the bronze medal four months later.

Christina Liebherr starts at the CHIO Aachen in June 2009. In the opening competition, No Mercy was paralyzed after a jump, whereupon she ended the ride. Because of this injury, No Mercy was withdrawn from the sport.

By losing her successful horse, Liebherr lost her top position in international equestrian sport. Among other things, through training stays with Ludger Beerbaum in 2010, she tries to build on her old successes.

The abbreviation LB in front of the name of your horse refers to the La Baumetta equestrian center in Riaz. Her trainer was the former German champion Susanne Behring from December 1995 to August 2011 . Then father Hans Liebherr downsized the tournament stable.

In August 2013 Christina Liebherr was elected President of the International Jumping Rider Club (IJRC), representing the interests of international show jumping riders. She succeeded Cayetano Martínez de Irujo in this office. At the end of 2017, she was replaced by Kevin Staut ; Liebherr is now Vice President.
