The Zangersheide horse (Zangersheide Studbook) is a riding horse breed . The origin of the breed is the Zangersheide stud in Lanaken in the Flanders region in Belgium .
Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .
Exterior
The Zangersheider horse is a modern sport horse in a rectangular format (it is longer than it is high). The aim is to have a horse with good suitability as a show jumping horse ; noble, large-framed with healthy joints. Due to its young history and the open breeding policy, the Zangersheider horse is rather inconsistent in appearance and size. The height is usually 165 to 175 cm.
interior
The aim is an intelligent, motivated and capable riding horse.
Breeding history
Zangersheide was founded in Lanaken in the 1970s by Léon Melchior . In the course of time, the breeding specialized in show jumping horses. Soon the riders of the Zangerheideteam achieved international successes like at the European Championships in Vienna in 1977 and at the Olympic Games in 1992 , when Johan Heins won the gold medal and Piet Raijmakers the silver medal on horses of the stud. After that, the stud also worked with breeders and show jumpers from the Netherlands, France, England and Germany.
In European horse breeding, every country has so far had its own breeds or horse lines, such as the Cheval de Selle Français in France, the Belgian Warmblood in Belgium, the KWPN in the Netherlands or the German Hanoverians , Oldenburgs or Holsteiners . So it was a new idea to use an international selection of successful show jumpers as the basis of a breed . Among others, Ludger Beerbaum's successful mare Ratina Z comes from Zangersheide. Levisto Z is currently one of the most famous Zangersheid horses in show jumping . The horses of the stud are often named with a Z attached to their name .
Artificial insemination began as early as 1970 in Zangersheide , which at the time was rejected by most horse breeders and is now the standard in horse breeding . In addition to embryo transfer , which is now also used in other horse breeds for sport horse mares, Zangersheid horse breeding is also open to cloning horses.
